The actress Glynis Johnswho gave life to Winifred Banks, the matriarch of the film ‘Mary Poppins‘, died this Thursday in Los Angeles, United States, at the age of 100. The death of Johns, born in the South African city of Pretoria in October 1923, has been confirmed by the actress’s agent, Mitch Clem.

Johns won a Tony Award in 1973 for best actress for her performance as Desiree Armfeldt in ‘A Little Night Music’, a Broadway musical. The actress was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for ‘The Sundowners’ and a Golden Globe for Best Actress for ‘The Chapman Report’.

However, perhaps her best-known role was that of the matriarch and suffrage advocate of the woman in ‘Mary Poppins’, the Walt Disney musical in which she shared the screen with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. Her portrayal of Jane and Michael Banks’ mother, who hires the services of a magical nanny to care for her two children, earned him a Laurel Award for Best Supporting Actress.

In a statement sent to ‘Variety’ magazine, Clem stated that with his death the golden age of Hollywood ends. Johns was the oldest actress at the Disney Legend Awardsthe Disney Hall of Fame that recognizes those people who have contributed the most to the company.

With his death, his ‘Mary Poppins’ co-star, Dick Van Dyke, becomes the oldest actor at the Disney Legend Awards. Johns was also since 2020, when Olivia de Havilland died, the nominated for an older acting Oscar.
