Lauren SS Hissrich is the person responsible for the overall series “The Witcher” – it is up to her to find the right cast, directors, editors, and especially screenwriters. Before adapting Andrzej Sapkowski’s work, she did not have much experience with the fantasy genre, but she successfully created series such as “Dardevill” or “Umbrella Academy”. He approaches the work on “The Witcher” with great commitment, which is appreciated by the Polish writer, who is known for saying that if he doesn’t like something, he says it.
Lauren SS Hissrich: There is no way to please all “The Witcher” fans
“Adapting my books is not an easy art and I congratulate Lauren and her team on the great accomplishment of this task. I watched with great joy and I hope that the third season will be done with even greater momentum” – he wrote in the second season of “The Witcher” . This is exactly what I wanted to ask in an interview with Lauren SSHissrich, but then she was not sure if the writer had already seen what she had prepared for all viewers in the new series with Henry Cavill in the lead role. Instead, she cited an anecdote that Sapkowski told her in response to the question whether he reads the scripts and wanted to add something to them:
It was a long and beautiful story about how he didn’t want to go to the grocery store, unpack his groceries, cut vegetables, and then cook chicken soup. He wants to get the ready-made dish already so that he can enjoy it. It makes a lot of sense. (…) He believes in the power of adaptation, which means he knows that I will not be forced to copy his book, but rather try to tell the same stories in a different way – which is really great.
She also admitted that she listened very closely to the voices of Geralt’s admirers, especially the critical ones, because, as she emphasized, “she does not want to listen only to people who like what she does”. There have been a lot of changes in the new series, which are necessary from the point of view of the series, because what is in the books cannot necessarily be translated directly into the language of the film. “We were horrified to see what the action of our series was,” Lauren admitted, adding, “We have a lot of themes and plots from the books, but we also needed to add a lot of material to make it all come true. I’ll be honest with you – it was a huge challenge.” The writers and I sat for a long time to find the narrative thrust for this series. “
