On December 19, 2023, the Minister of Culture, Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, pursuant to the resolution adopted by the Sejm on “restoring legal order and the impartiality and reliability of the public media and the Polish Press Agency”, dismissed the authorities of the public media. At night, United Right politicians began to occupy TVP buildings to express their opposition and make it difficult for the new authorities to enter the offices.
TV Republika records viewership records. All because of the “collapse” of TVP Info
The next day, the TVP Info broadcast was interrupted, and some of the employees employed during the so-called good change remained in the TAI building, protesting against the authorities’ actions. But some of them immediately went to TV Republika, which sympathizes with PiS. These people include, among others: Michał Rachoń and Danuta Holecka, who since December 29 has been running some editions of the TV daily entitled “Today”.
The station constantly broadcasts reports of protests against changes in public media, and its broadcasts often feature politicians of the United Right and controversial commentators well known from the previous incarnation of TVP Info. One of such people is the satirist Jan Pietrzak, who made a scandalous comment on Republika TV regarding Poland’s acceptance of migrants.
I have a cruel joke. They count on Poles being prepared because we have barracks for immigrants in Auschwitz, Majdanek, Treblinka, Stutthof. We have a lot of barracks built here by the Germans and there we will detain these immigrants, illegally forced onto us by the Germans, said Jan Pietrzak on December 31.
His words were widely echoed around the world. On New Year’s Day, Justice Minister Adam Bodnar reacted and announced on the X website that an investigation into the matter had been initiated. Representatives of the Auschwitz Museum also commented on the matter, and President Andrzej Duda was said to be outraged by these words. Many Internet users also do not like the opinions of guests promoted by TV Republika.
One of the brands distances itself from the activities of TV Republika. We wrote an e-mail to another company that advertises with them
decided to recall one of the brands whose advertisements are displayed on the station. “Hi @mBankpl. I understand that by sponsoring advertisements on TV Republika you support Jan Pietrzak’s slogan ‘we have barracks for immigrants, in Auschwitz, in Majdanek, in Treblinka’?” – we read. It didn’t take long for the company to respond:
Thank you for your signal. We’ll check it. We do not support the activities of this station. Justyna – this comment was provided by the official mBank account on the X portal.
TV Republika also airs advertisements for the IKEA brand, whose ideas are far from the words that Jan Pietrzak allowed himself. The brand is also known for supporting the LGBT+ community, which has often been attacked on Republika TV. We have written an e-mail to IKEA regarding this matter. It turns out that the brand did not even know that its TV spots with such a profile were broadcast. Read more about it .
