X-ray is undoubtedly one of the most useful devices in medicine. It allows us to detect changes in our body and thus determine what treatment will be appropriate. However, it is not used regularly. X-ray examination is ordered by doctors only when there is a real need. However, this issue was once approached in a completely different way. X-ray as part of the Miss Contest? Why not!
Miss correct posture
We can mention a lot of items in the history of unusual competitions. The most impressive mustaches, stuffing yourself in a telephone booth, eating hot dogs on time or swallowing a live goldfish, which is not very humane. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Miss Correct Posture pageant was very popular. They were organized by American chiropractors, and their aim was to promote correct posture, which contributes to maintaining good overall health.
The competitions were held during annual chiropractic meetings and were mostly for women. As we read on the website, the men’s competitions did not attract crowds and “the guys always slouched”, so they were abandoned quite quickly. Female Miss pageants have been practiced for two decades. The winner was chosen based on her beauty and body posture. This was examined, among other things, using X-ray. Below we present a photo from one of such competitions. It took place in 1956 in Chicago and was won by 18-year-old Lois Conway.
“Nobody cared about radiation”
The very idea of the competition sounds quite good, even today. After all, it promotes health. However, using X-ray for fun is not the best idea. Today, X-ray examinations are not overused because radiation is not indifferent to health. More about it: .
In those days, no one cared about radiation
said Reginal Hug, former president of the Chiropractic Association.
