Ana Ofelia Murguia became famous outside Mexico for her role as great-grandmother Coco from the Disney film of the same title. She lent her voice to the old woman in the original version of the animation. Unfortunately, on Sunday, sad news arrived from Mexico about the death of the 90-year-old actress.
Ana Ofelia Marguia – Coco’s great-grandmother – is dead
Ana Ofelia Marguia was an award-winning Mexican artist who had been performing in films and theater since the 1960s. She was cast mainly in supporting roles, for which she received numerous awards. The actress’s death was recorded by the National Institute of Fine Arts and Letters in Mexico:
We regretted the news of the death of the first-class actress Ana Ofelia Murguia, who for years had been part of the Compania Nacional de Teatro in Mexico and our Institute. Her artistic career was crucial for the development of theaters in the country – it was written on social media.
Ana Ofelia Marguia has appeared in over 100 productions, mainly Mexican ones. Some of them could also be seen in Poland, such as “Jutro” (1978), “Motywy Luz” (1985) or “Queen of the Night” (1993). However, she gained the greatest recognition in the world as great-grandmother Coco – a charming old woman for whose memory little Miguel fights in the land of the dead. In the Polish version, this role was taken by Teresa Lipowska.
The actress lent her voice to great-grandmother Coco, but despite the similarity, Disney did not draw the old woman’s inspiration from her in the animation. Although it was never confirmed, Coco was supposed to receive the “face” of another Mexican elderly woman – Maria Salud Ramirez, who recently died at the age of 109. The similarity between the two ladies – the computer-generated one and the real one – is striking. Ms. Ramirez’s relatives say people from Pixar talked to her and took photos of her. Maria Salud Ramirez’s grave in Santa Fe de la Laguna is a local tourist attraction visited by “Coco” fans from all over the world.
