Limahl was born into a poor family, one of four children of a miner, Eric, and Cynthia Hamill. Already as a child, he showed great interest in the stage. He started singing at the age of 7, and then joined the Westcliff-on-Sea Palace Theater Repertory Company, where he performed successfully. It was during preparations for the play “Godspell” that he created an image that was later loved by millions.
Thanks to him, Kajagoogoo became a hit. They kicked him out of the group just before the recording of their debut album
The aspiring artist wanted to stand out from the rest of the cast and, with the director’s consent, he gave himself an original hairstyle in the style of Rod Stewart. Later he went to London to join the band known to the world as Kajagoogoo in 1982. Their first success was “Too Shy”, which became a real phenomenon, taking 5th place on the “Billboard Hot 100” in the USA. At that time, Limahl was still trying to break into the world of film, but numerous castings resulted in only a small role in the crime series “The Gentle Touch”.
In the meantime, he also worked at the Embassy Club, where he met the keyboardist of Duran Duran. He offered to help him create the group’s debut album. Everything was already agreed and the musicians were supposed to enter the studio after the end of the tour, but unexpectedly Limahl found out that he had been excluded. – I was so shocked that I thought I was going to fall. I felt hurt. We experienced exciting moments, we were number one in the world, everyone was waiting for our new album, and they ruined everything – in an interview for “Yahoo Entertainment”. At that time, he had no idea that the decision would become an opportunity for him to become a solo artist.
These are the biggest hits in Limahl’s solo career. What does a musician look like today?
However, the failure did not discourage Limahl and thanks to cooperation with the legend of popular music, Giorgio Moroder, he created the song “Only for Love”, which started his solo career, conquering the charts. Later he released the song “Too Much Trouble”, which was equally successful, and the hit “Never Ending Story”, which became the leitmotif of the fairy-tale fantasy film “The Neverending Story” directed by Wolfgang Peterson. This resulted in the album “Don’t Suppose”, which, contrary to expectations, did not sell well.
In the following years, Limahl tried to conquer the music industry again, but his phenomenon began to fade noticeably. Discouraged, he stopped creating new songs and focused on touring. In 2017, he even sang during the New Year’s Eve with TVP, and three years later he stood on the same stage with Zenek Martyniuk. Later, he also began to perform as a DJ and willingly appeared in reality programs. Ultimately, however, he abandoned music in favor of his old passion, i.e. . He graduated first from Pinewood Actors Studio, then The Actors Center and returned to theaters. – It’s not about being famous or something stupid like that. It’s very interesting and causes an adrenaline rush – he said in Forbes.
On December 19, 2023, the artist celebrated his 65th birthday. He is active on social media, especially on Instagram, where he boasts about his new projects. In 2020, he appeared in the film “Zenek”. However, a big surprise for many is the fact that there is no trace of his old hairstyle and he opted for a slightly more classic image.
