There was poverty in Zamachowski’s family home. How does the actor remember his childhood?
He was born on July 17, 1961 in the small town of Brzeziny near Łódź. Although he lived in a manor house that was privatized during the war, he came from a poor, working-class family that could barely make ends meet. However, he did not feel inferior to his peers and treated his fate as something completely obvious. – I grew up in the yard and the nearby old brickyard. In the morning I would run out with a piece of bread dipped in water from a bucket and sprinkled with sugar, and in the evening I would come back covered in dirt, my grandmother would throw me and my sister into the laundry tub and then I would go to sleep under a large eiderdown in complete darkness, because there was no light in the house at that time – childhood in interview for “Twój Styl”.
Although his parents did everything to provide their children with decent conditions, times were hard and they could not afford unnecessary expenses, such as sweets. He ate these only when he received them as a gift, and most often they were given to him by the kindergarten cooks. However, he had to “earn” them, which he did by singing under the kitchen windows. – Everything that was uncool is forgotten, and what remains is the nice taste and smell of childhood – in an interview for Radio Three.
He was a teenager when he started his first job. What did Zamachowski do?
Zamachowski did not cause any educational problems. At school, he was considered a talented but lazy student, because instead of focusing on studies, he preferred to read poetry, sing or play the piano. However, he was willing to help others, and although he had little himself, he saw no obstacles to giving his shoes or jacket to a poorer friend. Due to the difficult financial situation of his parents, he had to quickly take full responsibility and, at the age of 15, he started working as an organist at the Civil Registry Office. – I’ve been earning my own money since I was 15. I don’t come from a wealthy family, I didn’t get pocket money because my parents simply couldn’t afford it, he confessed in one of the interviews. However, the work gave him a lot of satisfaction and he began to appreciate the money he earned. Over time, he decided to expand his activities to include performances at various local events. – So we used to go to village parties with the band – he recalled.
