Holidays are a time we like to spend with. Every year, many people prepare twelve Christmas Eve dishes and further dishes for the rest of the holiday days. Even though we sit at the table for hours, there will always be leftovers that we won’t be able to eat before the last guests go home. Fortunately, you don’t have to waste food. Here’s what you can do with your food after the holidays.

What to do with food after the holidays? Don’t throw it in the garbage

In many large ones, the so-called soup kitchens where you can bring food you won’t eat anymore. However, please remember to return products that are fully fit for consumption, without any signs of mold or deterioration, and in the condition in which we would like to receive them. Pack them in airtight containers or jars and attach a note with the preparation date, product description and allergen content. Do not leave raw meat, raw eggs, alcohol and uncooked food in eateries, which should be stored in the refrigerator.

If there is no soup kitchen near where you live, share your food with your neighbors or post an announcement on a local Facebook group to donate food. There is a high probability that people will quickly apply for them. Don’t forget to pack food for your family before they leave your home after the holidays. It is worth starting to prepare containers for previously purchased products a few months in advance for this occasion.

Can you freeze food after the holidays? Not in every case

A good way to avoid wasting food after the holidays is to freeze leftovers. However, it turns out that not all dishes are suitable for freezing. While there is no contraindication to placing bread, dumplings or soup in the freezer, this will not work for vegetable salad and other dishes with mayonnaise. An interesting trick to prevent the salad from spoiling when freezing is to simply avoid adding mayonnaise. Do this only after you put it on a plate. If you have dried compote left over, you can use it to make a cake and simply grind the ham into a pâté. You can prepare nutritious cocktails from fruits and vegetables. Thanks to simple tricks, you won’t waste food and save a lot of money.
