Before Zbigniew Nowak founded Happy End, he was a member of various bands, including: Vox Remedium or the Fowler Brotherhood. However, he did not want to perform only with men. He came up with the idea to create a show in which he would perform only with women. – I said “enough of the males, I want girls on stage”! The idea of creating a coeducational group grew in me. I want the girls to be pretty, shapely, attractive, sing and dance beautifully – he said in TVN’s “Uwaga”. This is how Happy End was created in 1975.
Passion and love united them. When they met, he was married
Just a year after the band’s debut, Zbigniew Nowak went to Zielona Góra to take part in the Soviet Song Festival. It was then that an exceptionally beautiful girl, Danuta Kremer, caught his attention. When he heard her sonorous voice, he fell madly in love, even though he was married at the time. He decided to invite her to cooperate because he believed that she was better than anyone else in performing “How are you, darling”, which later became their big hit. The artist, who was 9 years younger than me, felt honored and agreed to join the group.
As their cooperation developed, Kremer and Nowak’s love also blossomed. Initially, however, they did not want to give themselves a chance, they were afraid of criticism, because from the very beginning there was talk about their imminent end. However, the feeling was stronger and thanks to it they overcame difficult moments, which were numerous in their relationship. Despite quarrels, they always managed to find a compromise. – I also always knew my place in the row, so when we performed together on stage, he was the band leader, and I never took advantage of the fact that I was his girlfriend and later his wife – vocalist. However, they had to learn to separate work from private life. – I left all my home problems off the stage. He is my “court” composer and creates many beautiful pieces especially for me, she said.
Years pass and their love endures. What’s up with Danuta Kremer and Zbigniew Nowak?
When martial law broke out in Poland, the Happy Ends band canceled all planned concerts. Then they focused on starting a family. Danuta Kremer became pregnant and gave birth to a son, Rafał. The situation in the country was not improving and savings began to decline. Then they came up with the idea to go abroad. Ultimately, it fell to the United States. – We left in search of bread – said Zbigniew Nowak in “Uwaga”. They settled in Chicago, where their daughter, Michelle, was born. During this time, the musician took up various activities. First he worked making floor grinders, and then he and his wife opened a restaurant. Over time, they also returned to performing in front of an audience, giving concerts for the American Polish community.
Danuta Kremer and Zbigniew Nowak have been married for almost 50 years. In 2015, during the band’s 40th anniversary, they became engaged for the second time. The singer is still professionally active and regularly performs in front of audiences. – As long as people want to listen to our songs, I will sing them – she declared recently in one of the interviews. Her husband, in turn, ended his career after suffering a pulmonary embolism. Today he enjoys a well-deserved retirement, but still composes songs for the group Happy End.
