Christmas gifts are supposed to bring joy to the recipient, but sometimes things don’t work out that way. A poorly thought-out gift can make someone feel bad, so it’s best to be careful. We asked five women what unwanted gifts they received from their men.

Christmas is primarily a time spent with loved ones, but also a time for gifts. Each family has slightly different rules regarding Christmas giving to loved ones. In some homes, family members are given surprises, in others they are consulted about their purchasing intentions. Sometimes couples get gifts together, sometimes you buy a gift for only one person whom you selected during a family meeting.

Surprises don’t always work out

“My husband stubbornly gives me surprise gifts every year for Christmas, which I can’t stand. Mainly because, despite his best intentions, he is completely incapable of buying me gifts. We have been together for 15 years, and when I open a gift from him, I feel as if I he didn’t know at all,” says Kasia. Last year for Christmas he bought me some ice skates. I’ve never been ice skating! And he said: why don’t you start? Of course, they are in a box at the bottom of the closet,” she adds. “And for my birthday, he gave me a huge makeup palette. But I almost don’t wear make-up at all!” Kasia laughs.

“I just felt sad”

Dorota, who has been in a relationship for three years, says that after the last Christmas surprise gift from her boyfriend, she would prefer not to receive anything this year. “He bought me a gift voucher for a lingerie store. It wasn’t even a nice box packed in an elegant envelope, but an A4 printout from a computer,” he says. He didn’t even bother to pack it in any way,” she complains. “I just felt sad,” she adds. In turn, Ania, who recently celebrated her tenth wedding anniversary, received a food processor from her husband. “And he knows perfectly well that I hate cooking and practically never do it. Such a gift – a touch. It’s better if he doesn’t buy anything,” she said.

“He could have asked directly”

“Last year, for Christmas, I received a set of facial care cosmetics from my partner – and I might add that we are both over forty,” says Gosia. “It seemed OK, but they were cosmetics for much younger women. It was a waste of money. He could have asked directly,” she adds. Magda remembers her last year’s gift from her partner with laughter. “I received a set of underwear. The panties were too small and the bra was too big. Much too big. Fortunately, he didn’t throw away the receipt, so I returned what he bought for me to the store, and for the same money I bought two other sets of underwear in another store “In the right size,” he laughs.
