The same songs have been topping the December charts for decades. What makes some songs become Christmas hits, and others, despite the authors’ best intentions, fail to catch the listeners’ ears? Music market analysts have a theory about this.

Every year, musicians work hard to create the best music possible, and listeners are still loyal to the hits from years ago. What’s the recipe for the perfect Christmas hit? Music experts conducted a study, and the conclusions drawn from it may be a useful tip for many.

Creating a Christmas hit is quite a challenge. Music experts have identified some useful tips

In 2018, experts from the Ostereo label analyzed the songs that topped the British Christmas charts over the last five decades. It turns out that more than half of the songs were covers and ballads, and what’s more, most of them were completely unrelated to the holiday theme. Based on the collected data, specialists identified four key features, which were published on the New Musical Express website. At best, the perfect Christmas hit lasts 3 minutes and 57 seconds. Another important criterion is that the entire composition is in the key of G major and at a tempo of 114 beats per minute. It turns out that the age of the performer is also an equally important issue – it should not exceed 27 years.

“Last Christmas” is not the best Christmas hit. This title belongs to a cover of a Presley song

The study allowed experts to select from a wide list a song that meets all the above-mentioned features and is therefore the best Christmas hit of all time. After extensive analysis, the title went to a cover of the song “Always on My Mind” by the group Pet Shop Boys. The composition lasts 3 minutes 55 seconds and has 125 beats per minute, which makes it closest to perfection. In second place was the iconic “Mary’s Boy Child” from the repertoire of Boney M. In turn, the world-famous song by Wham! in the UK it never made it to the top.
