December 26, 2023 is the first anniversary of his death. The outstanding actor and director has been involved in helping the poor and homeless for years. Few knew that he was motivated to do this by painful experiences from years ago. What was his childhood like?
Emilian Kamiński had a difficult childhood. He experienced poverty and violence from his loved ones
He grew up in the 1950s. He was a lively child and a rebellious teenager. He often left the house without permission and spent time in the nearby forests. More than once he even came close to death. – On New Year’s Eve 1954, I went to the forest. Alone. It was freezing cold and I was two and a half years old. I would probably have died, frozen, or disappeared if it weren’t for a pack of stray dogs. They found me, surrounded me and warmed me with their own bodies – he recalled in . Busy parents had neither time nor much knowledge about consciously raising their children, so any offense was severely punished by beating. This left a mark on the future actor’s adult life. – I don’t want to talk about my childhood. I’m not going back to him. If anything, it was only to those trees where I was sitting, because I was usually away from home – in an interview with the “Świat i Głos” magazine. – I was a beaten child, so I know how it affects children – he added, not hiding his bitterness.
Later, another reason appeared that escalated his conflict with his parents. His mother and father wanted him to become an accountant, while he dreamed of acting and stubbornly pursued this plan. – I had to do everything myself, but it’s good that it happened, thanks to which I know the value of work and can appreciate it – he said years later. However, frequent quarrels made him constantly run away from home. Then not only did he have no place to sleep, but he was also starving. It was then that he could count on the help of the homeless and Gypsies who took care of him. – I remember such a painful time when I was hungry. I haven’t eaten for 52 hours. I was rescued by homeless people at the Central Station. They showed me where I could sleep, he said.
He was an actor and philanthropist. He was not indifferent to the harm of others
After starting his career, he decided that he would help those he could count on in difficult times. He then founded the Atut foundation, which is famous for carrying out charitable activities for the poor and homeless. When he established the Kamienica Theater, he also started organizing Christmas Eve meetings for those who had nowhere to go during Christmas. – They are hopeless. The biggest problem of homelessness is the lack of hope. This is a ray of hope to give them hope – he explained on Polish Radio. He added that this problem is particularly close to him because he experienced it firsthand many years ago. – I understand what homelessness is because once, in my childhood and youth, I ran away from home and was homeless. Among the homeless, I also had friends who are no longer alive because they froze, he said sadly. Until his last moments, the actor was eager to get involved in charity campaigns, running workshops for children from care centers and classes for people with disabilities. For his activities in 2012, he was honored with the Saint Medal. Brother Albert.
