Quito was the last Latin American capital that was yet to set foot. He managed to do it this year as well. Famous Spanish designer Custo Dalmau, best known for his Custo Barcelona brand, was in the spotlight at the Quito Fashion Night event that took place at the end of November.
The Catalan creative presented his spring-summer collection ‘Object of Desire’, with “emotional pieces that seduce women from the advanced fashion language that we try to create based on the experimentalism and maintenance of our genetics, which started 43 years ago and is based on the fusion of colors and material,” explained Custo before his show.
Of course, it was a visit with great expectations both for Ecuadorian fashionistas and for Dalmau himself, as he revealed in a previous interview. “We paraded several times in all the capitals of Latin America, except Quito. It was the only capital city on the continent we missed to present our collection. “We are very happy because for the first time we can show our work to the Ecuadorian followers, among whom we have some clients.”
For Custo, the capital of Ecuador is of great importance to the world of fashion. “There is a lot of creativity, I met some designers in New York and some others and I think there is really a lot of talent in Ecuador. I think fashion is still in its early stages, there is a lot of enthusiasm for everything related to fashion.”
The designer who always wears a dark blue T-shirt, very dark on his catwalks and other invitations (never in black, as one might mistakenly think because of the lighting in the photos), also shared one of the main values of his brand in the country: eternal youth, which is reconfirmed on social networks and online stores. How to be faithful to that motto for years, asks Custo, who these days is already at the limit of his seniority.
“Well, you try to let the years pass, but not let them affect your spirit. Age affects the body, but I believe that a young life can be maintained with the spirit. We are addressing these women and men who, despite their age, have a youthful spirit.”
And how does Custo maintain its youthful spirit? “Thinking like young people, trying not to age my spirit, trying to remain a teenager, even though I haven’t been for many years. I think excessive worry ages the spirit. Worries are there, but you have to be able to overcome them with a spirit of positivity. I’m not a psychologist or a philosopher, but I understand that when your attempts to overcome problems in a positive way fail, that’s when you get old.”
Custo Dalmau established himself in the world of fashion when he launched his career in the mid-90s, focusing on tops and T-shirts with graphic prints inspired by the look of Californian surfers. The design became popular on international television when the series Friends (1994-2004) used pieces in the costumes of his characters. Over time, the brand added a full range of women’s clothing, a men’s line, as well as shoes and fashion accessories. (AND)
