It cost a fortune, and may be Netflix’s biggest failure. Critics: This is total mockery

“Rebel Moon – Part 1: Fire Child” by Zack Snyder debuted on Netflix. Critics did not spare strong words when assessing the latest work of the creator of “Justice League”. Viewers looked at the painting with a slightly more favorable eye.

On December 22, a new production by Zack Snyder, known from “300”, the film “Watchmen” and several widely criticized productions from the DCEU universe, such as “Justice League”, “Batman vs Superman” or “Man of Steel”, was released on Netflix. This time, the director reached for an atmosphere that viewers clearly associate with Star Wars.

“Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire”. What is Zack Snyder’s new movie about?

As we read in the film’s description: “Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire” tells the story of Kora (Sofia Boutella), who, after an emergency landing in a distant corner of the universe, starts a new life in a settlement of peaceful farmers. However, it soon becomes their only chance for survival when the tyrannical Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) and his cruel emissary Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein) discover that the farmers have unwittingly sold their crops to the Bloodaxes – the leaders of a fierce group of rebels hunted by the Motherland.

Eager to find a group of warriors willing to risk their lives to protect the people of Veldt, Kora and Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), a soft-hearted farmer unfamiliar with the realities of war, set out in search of the Bloodaxes. Along the way, they gather a small team of warriors seeking redemption, including Kai (Charlie Hunnam), a pilot and mercenary; General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), a legendary leader; Nemesis (Doona Bae), a master swordswoman; Tarak (Staz Nair), a captive with a royal past, and Milius (E. Duffy), a resistance fighter.

Meanwhile, on the Veldt, Jimmy (voiced by Anthony Hopkins), the ancient mechanical defender hiding in the wings, awakens to fulfill a new purpose. But the members of the newly formed group of rebels must trust each other to stand together and fight together before the armies of the Motherland wipe them out once and for all.

The creators say that Snyder’s latest work cost $166 million. This is the amount spent on both parts of the production. The sequel to “Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Wound Dealer” is scheduled to debut on Netflix on April 19, 2024.

Rebel Moon – Part 1: Fire Child now available on Netflix. Critics left no stone unturned in the film

Judging by the critics’ opinions, the first part of the work was not worth so much money. On the day of the film’s release in the UK, the film scored only 9 percent on the freshness scale from critics, who wrote unfavorable reviews. It’s hard to imagine a worse result.

Currently, the average reviewer rating is 23 percent, but this is still not much. Viewers are much kinder to “Rebel Moon”. In their ratings on the same website, the film received 73 percent on the scale.

Critics justify their assessments with similar conclusions. Reviews repeat the statement that “Rebel Moon” is a failed fake of Star Wars. “It’s like Star Wars, but without the interesting adventures and sense of humor,” writes Russ Simmons, a critic from Kansas. Richard Roeper from the Chicago Sun-Times emphasizes that “Snyder’s effort was wasted on typical characters and slow-motion battle sequences.”

“It could be a satire of science fiction, if not for the fact that Snyder is famous for his lack of humor,” warns viewers Jorge Rivera Rubio from Movie Network. Robert Kojder from What Culture notes that everything seen in the film has already been made and was made at a much higher level. In turn, AA Dowd from Empire Magazine, awarded the “top critic” symbol, does not spare any strong words: This is a total mockery. Cheap, dreary and gray Star Wars.
