Let there be no doubt: the style in which the new authorities used public television raises doubts not only among PiS politicians, but also among lawyers and commentators. The new authorities of TVP, and especially its journalists, face an extremely difficult task of building an objective medium and proving that slogans about depoliticization and restoring freedom of speech are not platitudes, and that public television itself is a national asset and not political loot. We wrote about it in more detail here.
However, regardless of the assessment of the events of December 20, it must be admitted that an era has ended in the history of TVP. It lasted eight years and produced phenomena that we will certainly not miss.
And here they are:
1. If the facts do not match the thesis, so much the worse for the facts. If, for example, the thesis is that in the square. Lech Kaczyński’s in Lublin is dirty and there is garbage lying around, so they should be scattered. And if they are not lying around, the reporter will diligently dig out the garbage from the bin, artistically drape it in the square, and the cameraman will immortalize it in terrifying frames. And this is exactly the message that would have gone out into the world if it weren’t for the city surveillance cameras that captured the entire action. So TVP was recorded recording. Such inception.
The case had an epilogue, because a TVP reporter fired for spreading garbage found a job. He went to the Marshal’s Office, where PiS ruled. Not to the department dealing with waste segregation, and maybe that’s a pity.
2. Ghost designer. Who is Christian Paul? – all of Poland wondered. Apart from the fact that he was supposed to be an American fashion designer who complimented Agata Kornhauser-Duda’s style in “Wiadomości”. Internet users should have been satisfied with the designer’s assurances that “he is real and loves Poland”, but somehow they were not enough. Maybe it was because his social media profiles appeared after his appearance on the flagship news service of public television? Or maybe it was the fact that he spoke Polish exceptionally well for an American fashion designer? According to the industry magazine “Press”, the performance resulted in 13,000. publications and advertising equivalent worth PLN 7.6 million. It’s strange that the designer didn’t follow suit and release collection after collection. Or at least he didn’t appear on “Top Model”.
Let’s leave it aside whether the topic of the First Lady’s clothes is really a matter for the most important news website of the day.
And speaking of clothes, well…
3. The whole world admires the TVP reporter. TVP sent its reporter to the Oscars 2019. – According to Reuters, Zuzanna Falzmann is a “wonderful woman on the red carpet.” Foreign media picked our journalist out of the crowd of stars and asked her about her stunning outfits – “Wiadomości” was delighted. People of little faith admittedly pointed out that the reporter’s outfits somehow did not appear in red carpet styling reviews, and apart from the TVP representative, many other women wore red dresses. But it’s definitely envy.
4. President Kaczyński in “Pytanie na Śniadanie”. Jarosław Kaczyński likes bigos. Did you know? Certainly not, but that’s what the public television breakfast program is for. The most powerful man in Poland, the president of the ruling party, sat on the “Questions for Breakfast” couch and faced questions about whether he likes barbecuing and whether he has established a bond with his cats. What it was for, who knows. But the sacrifice of the president, who, as everyone knows, is not a morning person, is worth making. Get up with the chickens to talk about how often he thinks about his mother? Thank you, I’ll lie down.
5. “What should you do to actually win?” Since we are talking about difficult questions, it is impossible not to mention those asked by the head of “Wiadomości”, Danuta Holecka, to PiS politicians. It is worth remembering that Holecka, the editor, has worked at TVP for 30 years and really knows how to put pressure on the interlocutor. Although maybe not necessarily an interlocutor from PiS. “It’s true what you say,” she admitted in a conversation with Mateusz Morawiecki. – What should you do to actually win? – she continued talking to Andrzej Duda during the presidential campaign. “We will build the Central Airport and this is already becoming a fact. LOT, which was supposed to collapse, did not collapse, the shipyards are being rebuilt. Can this also be counted among the successes of our economy, which will remain unquestioned for years?” – she asked Jarosław Kaczyński. At least there was nothing about barbecue. Or cats.
6. “Wiadomości” is a scary series. And finally, the cherry on the cake. In the material “Illegal migration is paralyzing Europe”, an amateur video was shown in which two motorcycles could be seen approaching a dry cleaning facility, and a moment later there was a shooting. Viewers heard that “similar situations in many places throughout Europe are almost an everyday occurrence.” However, as it turned out, these terrifying scenes came from the Swedish series “Snabba Cash”, which tells the story of the Stockholm underworld. After a wave of criticism, the television explained that “the author of the report did not state that it depicted a real event.” I see.
7.Für Deutschland. What we will repeat. It’s bad enough that “Wiadomości” did it at least 77 times.
