“19:30” instead of “Wiadomości” on TVP. “Television returns to citizens”

The end of TVP’s “Wiadomości” has come. A new information service has just debuted on Telewizja Polska. From today, viewers interested in reports of events from Poland and the world will be able to follow “19:30”.

On December 20, 2023, the revolution in public media began. Minister of Culture Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz dismissed the current presidents of Telewizja Polska, Polish Radio and PAP, as well as the supervisory boards of the companies. Around 11:00, the broadcasting of TVP Info was interrupted, and “Teleexpress” and the classic edition of “Wiadomości” were not on the air. Marek Czyż appeared in the studio.

This is the end of “News”. The first edition of “7:30” was broadcast on TVP

“No Polish citizen who finances public media is obliged to listen to propaganda. He has the right to expect reliable and objective information. “Wiadomości” will show a photograph of Poland and the world. A photograph, not a painting. The picture was painted for eight years with party colors. Today there will be no “Wiadomości”, but tomorrow we will provide you with a reliable information program. Instead of propaganda soup, we will offer you clean water,” the journalist promised on Wednesday evening. Now viewers can verify for themselves whether the new TVP authorities managed to keep their promises.

On Thursday at 7:30 p.m., the first full-length news program was broadcast, created under the supervision of the new authorities – Grzegorz Sajór, head of the Television Information Agency, and Paweł Płuska, head of the new flagship TVP news program.

The edition began with a board that reminded viewers of the definition of a news program. The band’s new graphic design immediately caught the eye. After the opening credits, Marek Czyż appeared on the screen and explained the recent events on TVP. “This change is necessary, we need to change the language of the message, we need to inform,” the host emphasized. After this introduction, material by Marcin Antosiewicz, who had already served as a TVP correspondent in the past, was shown.

The recording concerned strikes against TVP that took place during the rule of Law and Justice. The reporter referred to people who “demanded public media for everyone every evening” in front of the headquarters of Telewizja Polska. The “Wiadomości” materials were commented on by Andrzej Krajewski, who has been following TVP programs in recent years. “Our own people and the opposition were treated completely differently. The goal was obvious – to stay in power.” They talked about the famous strips, propaganda and language used in “Wiadomości” in recent years.

Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, the new Minister of Culture, also appeared on the screen, noting that “the media must be returned to Poles.” This is definitely the topic that received the most attention in this edition. Journalists emphasized that they would listen to viewers’ criticism and correct mistakes. Media expert Wiesław Godzic was also quoted, who emphasized that there was no “discounted tariff” for the “19:30” program. “We watch and criticize,” he emphasized.

Not a word about assassinations, betrayal or communism. New reality on TVP

The new forces in TVP fulfilled their promise of trying to reach young people. One of the people who spoke about the “old” version of television was the popular YouTuber Paweł Kieler, author of songs inspired by “Wiadomości” strips. A slightly less understandable move was the request for a comment from Krystyna Janda, who is clearly associated with views favorable to the current government.

The material also reassures TVP viewers who watch the station for entertainment. “There will be no rudeness, there will only be TV series” – we hear from the president of TVP, Tomasz Sygut.

The program also included information about attempts to fulfill promises made to voters. The material about the new state budget was created by Witold Tabaka, known from TVN24 BiS. It openly stated that implementing the plans and increases would not be easy, and the deficit would increase.

In today’s edition of “19:30” the issue of unblocking funds from the KPO was also discussed. The activities were commented on by Dorota Bawołek (known as a Polsat correspondent and also writing for the new gazeta.pl website – Jedno News Dziennie) straight from Brussels, and statements by MEPs and Leszek Miller also appeared on TVP. The material notes that the application for funds was submitted by the Law and Justice party during its term of office, which was probably intended to be an attempt to emphasize the impartiality of the new TVP program.

“19:30” also included news from around the world. There was talk of Donald Trump being excluded from the primaries due to “incitement to attack the Capitol.” The tragic events of the shooting in Prague were reported and mention was made of Andrzej Poczobut, an oppositionist imprisoned in Belarus.

Who is the host of “19:30” Marek Czyż?

Marek Czyż is a famous radio and television journalist. He started his career at Student Radio Egida, and then he joined Radio TOP in Katowice. He previously worked at Telewizja Polska from 1996 to 2008, hosting programs such as “Monitor News” and “Gość Jedynki”. In addition, he was the host of programs devoted to Poland’s accession to the European Union, as well as a journalist on TVP3. In 2011, he joined TVP Info. There, until 2016, he co-hosted “Poranek Info”. He left public television during the summer of the same year. Until July 2023, he was the information director of Radio Zet.

The creators of the new TVP program are clearly trying to convince skeptical viewers. It is clear to the naked eye that the focus was on a gentle, muted message, devoid of sensationalism. For this purpose, not only the language was adapted, but also the technical aspects – music and characteristic jingles were omitted. “19:30” also lacked the famous stripes that became the symbol of “Wiadomości”. Stronger accents were placed only where attempts were made to explain the need for changes in the media. The diversity of experts and discussion sites was ensured. The budget was discussed by, among others, Law and Justice MP Marcin Ociepa.
