The Spanish film ‘The Snow Society’, by Juan Antonio Bayona, has been placed among the pre-candidates to compete for the Oscar for best international film, the Academy reported in a statement. Other films that are shortlisted in this category are the Mexican ‘Tótem’, the Finnish ‘Fallen Leaves’, the Italian ‘Io Capitano’, the Ukrainian ’20 Days in Mariupol’ and the American-British-Polish ‘The Zone of Interest’ ‘.

Bayona’s film, produced by Netflix, follows the 1972 Andes air tragedy and marks the director’s return to the Spanish language since the premiere of his acclaimed debut film ‘El Orfanato’.

‘The Snow Society’ has also been nominated as a candidate for best foreign language film at the 2024 Golden Globes. The film by the Spanish director, which recounts the real tragedy of flight 571 of the Uruguayan Air Force that took place in 1972, will compete with the French film ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ by Justine Triet, the Italian ‘I Captain’ by Matteo Garrone, the Finnish ‘Fallen Leaves’ by Aki Kaurismäki, the British ‘The Zone of Interest’ by Jonathan Glazer and ‘Past Lives’ by Celine Song.

The 81st Annual Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) Awards Gala will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2024.
