The Music Rising charity “Guitar Icons” auction was organized by The Edge from U2 and producer Bob Ezrin to help musicians from the New Orleans area, who suffered heavy losses and lost their earnings due to the coronavirus pandemic and Hurricane Ida. Thus, McCartney’s bass broke the previous record: in 2020, the Fender Mustang bass from 1969, belonging to Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones, paid 384,000 dollars.
It was not the only record of this auction. During the event, you could also buy Eddie Vedder’s guitar Lake Placid Blue Fender Telecaster, which the musician smashed personally during one of his concerts. This instrument was successfully auctioned for “only” $ 266,200, making the Fender the most expensive broken instrument in the history of the action. In total, two million dollars were raised for charity at the auction.
After the event, The Edge conveyed touched: – We would like to thank everyone involved in this extraordinary auction, both the artists who gave us their instruments so generously and the bidding buyers from all over the world who helped us break world records. He also emphasized that the proceeds from the Music Rising campaign will help bring back to life the musical culture that has influenced artists from all corners of the globe.
Bob Ezrin added: “The musicians of New Orleans are custodians of a unique musical tradition that they pass on to future generations and at the same time influence so many other genres that delight our ears. Auction money will help them continue this mission.
