This is the last such week. The government is to take back TVP before Christmas

The “October 15 Coalition” would be supposed to at least partially cleanse TVP, which has been partisan in recent years, before the holidays. “Rzeczpospolita” obtained the details of Tusk’s government plans.

Since it was taken over by Jacek Kurski, Telewizja Polska has become more and more one-sided and partisan year after year. There is evidence of this in the form of charts with the airtime allocated to individual political groups – during the “PO rule”, before 2015, the opposition and the government had comparable airtime on TVP. Currently, these proportions are, to put it mildly, unbalanced.

Therefore, no one should be surprised by the announcement of the separation of public media from parties. PiS has effectively cemented itself in concrete, but “Rzeczpospolita” journalists have talked to the ruling camp and know what plans Tusk and his team have in the coming days.

Changes in TVP before Christmas

The plan is simple – due to limited legal options, the government would like to start liquidating the TVP, Polskie Radio and PAP companies. This is to lead to a change in management boards, which would make it possible, for example, to transparently elect a new president of TVP (let us recall that Jacek Kurski, after his first dismissal from office, was re-elected as president of TVP in 2020, which was widely and critically commented on). The government can also dismiss company presidents themselves, citing concerns about mismanagement of company assets.

We will soon find out which path Donald Tusk’s government will follow. The first activities are scheduled to start on Monday or Tuesday.

TVP employees protest

TVP employees have known since the election day on October 15 that they are on the short list of issues to be dealt with by the new government. From the very beginning, Polish Television implemented activities aimed at mobilizing supporters of partisan media. Virtually every edition of the evening “” contains material with letters and telephone calls from concerned viewers, and many times there are materials about the need for pluralism (previously this topic was not considered important) and about the “attack on public media”. Last week, there was even a protest in front of the TVP headquarters, which, according to various estimates, gathered either about 200 people (TVP’s version) or much, much less (the version visible in the photos).
