Izabela Janiszewska: We usually assume that a child is good and innocent. Could it be bad?

– I was fascinated by the idea of using a child as a book hero – says Izabela Janiszewska. The author of popular crime stories and thrillers has recently returned with another novel. One of the important characters of “In the Claws” is six-year-old Benjamin.

Izabela Janiszewska’s novel takes place in two time planes. This modern one tells the story of Julia, who, after her husband’s death, moves into her husband’s family home with her six-year-old son. Readers of “In the Claws” will quickly find out that this will not be the beginning of a new, peaceful chapter in the lives of these two.

– A child sees the world in a completely different way than an adult – points out Izabela Janiszewska. – He sees the world as it is, he doesn’t cheat – he says and adds:

Thanks to this, we assume that the child always tells the truth, that he is honest, good and innocent, and I really wanted to look into this and see if the child could also be disturbing and scary. Or maybe even bad to the core?

In the conversation, which can be listened to in its entirety as the “Dobrze Read, Dobrze Listen” podcast by Publio.pl from December 15 at noon, and can also be viewed atkultur.gazeta.pl, Marta Korycka also talks to the writer about her earlier novels, but not Just.

About the book “In the Claws” by Izabela Janiszewska

After the loss of his father, six-year-old Beniamin and his mother move to a house in the suburbs. Soon the boy begins a disturbing relationship with his new friend.

It seems that the mysterious companion exists only in a child’s imagination, but when innocent fun turns into a series of terrifying events, a question arises: isn’t the mysterious friend a flesh-and-blood human after all?

What is really happening around Julia and her son? And didn’t it all start many years earlier, when the father of teenage Hela decided to bring justice to those who hurt his daughter?

A thriller full of tension and a sense of danger about what people are capable of when they find themselves in the grip of anger.
