With the change of government, a number of changes await not only Polish Television. These are inevitable also at Polska Press. It was taken over in February 2021, when the president of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection agreed to the purchase of the publishing house by PKN Orlen. This was accompanied by great controversy, and media market specialists pointed out that it meant the politicization of the website and the printed press. You will find more interesting texts on the home page.
There is an atmosphere of uncertainty in the Polish Press editorial offices and waiting for the decisions of the new government in the coming days. Changes in the publishing house are inevitable, and employees are still guessing about their scale and details regarding the reshuffle. Do they apply only to journalists or also to press offices and management? We will find out soon. “There is also a question whether the Polska Press authorities will manage to lay off the workers before they are removed themselves,” comments an anonymous journalist and informant of the website virtualmedia.pl.
“Revenge from beyond the grave”. Visible political action
The portal asked the Polska Press press office for a comment on possible mass layoffs. “Today, unofficial information has emerged that a restructuring plan has been prepared and is supposed to be approved by Orlen,” says one of the sources. He then adds that so far he has not heard about the start of a “purge” in the publishing house’s structures. Although all attention is focused on the restructuring of TVP, we should not forget about the important role of Polski Press in creating media reality – especially on a local scale – where it is often the first source of information for users.
The anonymous interlocutor also admits that “the unions are looking into the matter, there will probably be a reaction from them. There is confusion and anger because it looks like ‘revenge from beyond the grave’.” Trade unions admit that at the moment they have not received feedback on questions about the scale of changes. Dariusz Śmigielski, a representative of the group operating at the publishing house, informed that at the last meeting on Friday, December 8, the presidents of Polska Press, Stanisław Bortkiewicz and Miłosz Szulc, did not raise such a topic.
Trade unionists are not waiting. They wrote to the president of Orlen themselves
However, the trade unionists around Polski Press did not intend to wait and wrote a letter to Daniel Obajtek, the president of Orlen, demanding an answer to the plans for changes. Due to the centralization of the editorial office, there may be a wave of layoffs that would affect nearly 200 employees. The authors of the letter demand that no action be taken until a new owner appears.
