The way how skateboarding (skating on a board), visual arts, the street and independent culture are intertwined in Guayaquil is the common thread of the exhibition from the sidewalkwhich opens on Thursday, December 14 at 6:30 PM at the Anthropological and Contemporary Art Museum (MAAC).

The exhibition brings together visual artists Josué Lino, Iván Casanova, Greko Mejía, Daniel Ochoa, Damián Vásquez (from Barcelona).

“This project explores the diversity of artistic and cultural expressions that are intertwined in the local art circuit through different artists and their work and their relationship with skateboard culture,” Ochoa explains via video call.

The initiative presents more than 50 works of different formats, techniques and methodologies, in the fields of painting, photography, illustration, independent publishing, drawing, street art wall intervention, audiovisual and installation. These are stories that convey emotions and shared experiences and invite us to think about the relationship between individuals and the environment in which they live (in this case the sidewalk and the city). “I don’t think there has been another exhibition of this type in Ecuador,” defends Ochoa, who also promises the participation of skaters in the premiere of the exhibition, as Jota Macias (who has lived in the United States for 25 years)

All invited artists share a love for skating or the values ​​surrounding it, such as punk music, ska, rock and roll, hip hop and blues. The event also offers a concert of independent bands from these genres, such as Armada de Juguete, Niño en Llamas, K-mada, Maki Navaja, Lengua Mocha, El Cholo and Francisco Echeverría. The show will take place the day after the inauguration, which is Friday, December 15.

The initiative also includes the launch of the fanzine Sk8A vol. 4 “From the sidewalk.”
