The premiere of the last film in the James Bond series, “No Time to Die”, directed by Cary Fukunaga, took place in September 2021. Since then, there has been an intensive search for an actor to replace the iconic Agent 007. Although there were many potential candidates, including: Henry Cavill or Tom Hiddleston, the name of the rising film star has recently become particularly loud.
New Agent 007 found? Foreign media chose the favorite
According to a British magazine, the fight for the role will take place between two candidates, but the clear favorite of the creators is said to be none other than Paul Mescal. He has many roles in hit productions, but his career really gained momentum only in 2020, when he appeared in the series “Normal People”, which is an adaptation of Sally Rooney’s best-selling novel of the same title. He also made a splash as Will in “Daughter,” Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, and as the leading role in the comedy-drama “Aftersun,” for which he received an Oscar nomination. We will soon see him on the big screens again, this time in the sequel directed by Ridley Scott.
Interestingly, Mescal’s candidacy for the role of Agent 007 was already discussed after the premiere of “No Time to Die”, but due to his age – the actor is 28 years younger than Craig – it was not expected that the creators would actually offer him cooperation. Moreover, he himself approached the topic with a distance and did not comment very effusively on these speculations. – Would I play Bond? I guess? I don’t know. If there was a proposal, we would definitely discuss it, he said enigmatically in one of the interviews.

Craig’s successor is almost 30 years his junior. The creators of the series have specific age guidelines
If Mescal were actually cast in the role, he would be the youngest person to play this iconic character in the history of cinema. However, this is contrary to the position of people involved in the production of the series, including: with a statement by the producer, Michael G. Wilson, who repeatedly denied that such an idea was right. Also in an interview with Radio Times, Debbie McWilliams, responsible for casting, explained that the candidacies of actors under 30 are usually rejected in the preliminary stages because observations show that they are unable to meet the challenge. – When we started, it was a little different. We looked at a lot of younger actors. In my opinion, they did not have enough seriousness and experience to undertake it. It’s not only a role, but also a huge responsibility – the auditions during which the role of James Bond was entrusted to the then 38-year-old.
