Santos Iñurrieta, a painter born in Vitoria in 1950, died last night at his home in Mallorca after suffering from cancer.
Since he starred in his first individual exhibition in Vitoria in April 1971, Iñurrieta was part of the artistic avant-garde of Álava. In 1973, she received one of the awards of the VI Grand Prix of Basque Painting in San Sebastián.
At the beginning of his work, he practiced critical illustration, and his work focuses on human beings and their circumstances.
Later, the painter moved to Mallorca, and color took center stage in his work without giving up a strong surreal component. It is shown in his paintings, as explained by Daniel Castillejo, curator of the exhibition “Santos Iñurrieta. Let you have a good time” (Artium, 2017/2018), “a mental space, in which everything is possible and plausible.”
Castillejo also identified in Iñurrieta’s work “a broad knowledge of the history of art and the medium, which contrasts with the lack of loyalty to any school or form of representation linked to the market.”
