The Jácome brothers complement each other. Philip He is the oldest, 52 years old. They follow him Daniel51, and Juan Manuel46. For the trio, music is more than a profession, because after 35 years of career it has become a definitive driving force in life..

And his first memories are linked to this, but that’s no surprise. Their mother was someone who was decisive in their approach to art from an early age.

“My mother loves music. She plays guitar, she plays piano and she makes up songs like it’s something. So of course we grew up with that special ingredient forever. Without realizing it, she gave us the idea to make music,” Felipe confesses energetically from his home, located in the Chillos Valley.

They have so many memories that they cherish in their hearts, that unite and anchor them in art.. “I remember we had a big, beautiful piano in the house, and one day she taught us how to play.” The dance of the fleas. Our father, in turn, had a huge record collection and thanks to them we eventually discovered records by, for example, The Beatles and Elvis Presley. “We were always exposed to music,” says Juan Manuel, the youngest of the trio.

Sergio Sacoto and how music became his weapon of power: “among the noise and chaos I found myself singing”

The beginning

With that ‘bug’ of singing in mind, they came to school together, but in different classes. Felipe was 16; Daniel, 15, and Juan Manuel, 11. It was then that he was formally born Third World as a group of popstone. They registered to participate in an intercollegiate festival together with José the Pepe Mantilla, Felipe’s partner and the one who had the musical instruments they would use.

I wanted to be the drummer; Actually, that’s what we all wanted at first, but since Pepe was the owner, we had to adapt. Since I was the only one who could only play half the guitar, they told me, “Take care of that.” “Daniel and Pepe took turns playing bass and an old Yamaha organ,” Felipe says between laughs.

“I am at a very beautiful moment in my life”: Roberto Manrique on his return to TV (in a Netflix series), his renewed creative energy and his unexpected divorce

The roles and roles they would definitively take over in the band in the future came from searching for a path and ‘trial and error’. It is striking that the brothers’ knowledge of music is completely natural, as they have not received any professional training in that field to this day.

“Then we had to develop those skills almost from scratch. That’s interesting, because We are not great musicians, we do not play fast, nor are we virtuoso at all; But whatever we do, it has something of our own and that is what characterizes us,” says the eldest.

The feelings that performing on stage and singing bring are inexplicable. One of the performances they remember most is when they participated in the programming of the Todos las Voces festival in 1996.

“There were three days of concerts at the Rumiñahui Coliseum with exponents like Mercedes Sosa, Facundo Cabral, Fito Páez, Joaquín Sabina… All these legends from Latin America were there and we represented Ecuador. The day we played, Silvio Rodríguez also sang; So the Colosseum was packed from start to finish. An indescribable emotion and power was felt,” they recall.

The fourth brother

Roberto Canelos was also present at the interview for La Revista. When asked who this character is, de Jácome replied that he was like the “fourth brother”, since his presence has been with them since the beginning of everything. “We met Roberto when we were studying at school, and it was all because his brother Santiago was a friend of our cousin Franklin,” says Juan Manuel.

“Roberto appeared on the scene of the group of friends and was always close to us. When we founded Tercer Mundo, he accompanied us to the concerts and that is why we instructed him in the logistical tasks.” Connecting the equipment, collecting the cables and putting things away were some of the activities he did with the band. He worked with them for a ‘long’ and without realizing it they had nicknamed him ‘stage boss’. He even became his manager.

“Of course, he reached a point where he was already committed to developing his professional career and starting a family. But he is a very dear friend.”

Roberto, 50 years old, turns on his microphone and starts to talk about the relationship he has with the three brothers. “We are probably closer with Daniel, because I am godfather at the baptism of his children (laughs). But to give you an idea, Felipe was the godfather of my marriage to Daniel, who was the godfather of my daughter. His son’s name is Daniel Roberto, and my first daughter’s name is Giuliana Daniela. So we are connected in different ways,” he says.

They also hung out with Santiago, who wrote songs. But he got cancer and died a few years ago. Of course, he left behind many musical creations, which later served the Third World.

This is how the latest single was born, which they released on August 25 this year. This one, with the title Whole life: I promise you number 1has more than ten thousand views on the digital platform Spotify.

The production history of the song is quite curious, as it seems to once again confirm the link that exists between the four (Felipe, Daniel, Juan Manuel and Roberto). “One day he calls us and says: ‘Hey, I found a folder with a lot of texts and poems from Santiago. Let’s do something,’ and that’s what we did. We immediately answered yes. It was a very emotional and important event,” says Juan Manuel.

They met on April 4, 2023 at Roberto’s house, also located in the Chillos Valley, and sat down to judge them to see which one they chose. “An incredible thing happened: among the papers in the folder, Daniel took out one that was legible and well written, with the text ‘I promise you’, and the date on it was the same as that day. We consider it a resounding message from the universe,” says Roberto.

With that predisposition in mind, they took the poem and decided to work on a first text sketch based on it.. Seeing how that process guided them musically, they hit the nail on the head and presented it to their fans.

The future

It has already been 35 years, but they want to continue singing and composing for another 35 years, or until ‘the body allows it’.. For them, seeing how they have traveled for so many years is something that they do not feel because “it seems like it was yesterday”, but they take it with great gratitude.

So far, the three brothers have learned three important life lessons that they live by, which they summarize in three words: music, perspective and solidarity. “The fact that our audience is still fans after so long is very cool, because there are indeed people who have followed us forever. So much so that some have stopped being followers and have become friends. And now there are new listeners of different ages, and it fills us immensely when we see that they add something to what we do,” reveals Juan Manuel with a sense of longing.

María García, the Spanish woman who banned Ecuadorian footballer Felipe Caicedo, in conversation with EL UNIVERSO: “I am jealous of my privacy”

“Now the rules of the game are no longer the same as when we started, but there is a lot of national production of increasingly better quality and that moves us to continue doing our thing,” Felipe explains.

What Third World is preparing is even more music, which they have already conceived and designed, and they plan to launch it in the coming year, specifically between the months of January and February. They are also putting together and completing the final details to tour the country. They have defined dates for several cities such as Loja, Cuenca, Riobamba and Ambato. Other tour through countries they have visited before, such as the United States or Mexico, it is something they also long for.

One of their planned activities is to continue what they have called and baptized Roberto projectbecause it will continue to fill you with joy, memories and brotherhood.
