The images of Barack Obama, Andy Warhol and his own self-portrait make up the exhibition On The Map that the imbaburan artist Pablo Caviedes He has been presenting since the previous week at the Anthropological and Contemporary Art Museum (MAAC), and which will remain until Friday, December 17.

Caviedes, born in Cotacachi 49 years ago, presents his very particular vision of the identity of a United States deeply fed by foreign migration. “I am convinced that the engine of that country was, is and will continue to be immigrants.” He himself is a migrant who has resided in New York for 18 years, with a residency granted from the first year for possessing “extraordinary talent”, according to that migrant figure.

However, his first experience abroad was when at 18 years of age he won the A Paris award, organized by the French Alliance under the auspices of the Government of France, and which allowed him to reside for a year in that European capital nourishing himself with the culture and artistic techniques that he learned, for example, as student of the School of Fine Arts in Paris. And even there he had his first solo exhibition with prints.

Pablo considers himself a multidisciplinary visual artist. I am not pigeonholed into a style or a technique … My desire to experiment, to know, to understand new possibilities, new alternatives, new paths as a recurring need in my work and development process ”, he indicates. This experimentation led him to develop three-dimensional paintings, a technique that he explains in the book On The Map, which he wrote to detail the characteristics of those “sculptural paintings” that can rotate and have raised layers to compose the figures, which are located on the geographic profile of the United States.

The complete collection On The Map It is made up of 24 works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, videos and 3D paintings, but for this exhibition he brought versions on silk, since 3D paintings are very heavy. “I focus on talking about the first generation migrant (who arrives without speaking the language and who perhaps faces difficulties to work) based on the metaphor of my self portrait. The second image is of the former president Barack Obama as a metaphor for the second generation immigrant, that is, one who is born there and has the papers with all their rights, acquires education, acquires culture, identity and has other types of opportunities, with the possibility of even being president of this country formed by immigrants ”, Indicates about that exhibition, which includes a 12-minute video, directed by Daniel Sánchez.

The second generation immigrant is also represented by the image of Andy Warhol, Known as the father of pop art, who was born in Pennsylvania to Slovak parents. “And over time it becomes an icon of that country.”

Own Michelle ObamaUpon learning about this collection, he wrote a letter to Pablo to congratulate him on this concept in favor of immigrants in the United States, which appears in the book, the foreword of which is written by the artist James Warhola (artist’s original surname), nephew of Andy Warhol.

The book is for sale at MAAC and can be digitally reviewed at www.pablocaviedes.com.
