Every year we all observe changes taking place in nature, the best example of which are the seasons. It is interesting that these phenomena are caused by a combination of two factors. The first is the slope relative to the plane of the orbit. The second is a circular motion around the sun. Therefore, when the sun rises higher at the zenith, the day is longer than the night. And if the sun is lower than the horizon, the day is shorter than the night. However, two times a year there are so-called solstices, one of them will happen in days.
When does winter start in 2021? The calendar date of winter is not sliding. The Astronomical one is changing
The calendar date of winter is fixed and it is always December 22nd. This year it will be Wednesday. It is different with the astronomical one, because it coincides with the actual moment of the winter solstice. The sun then towers in the tropic of Capricorn m with the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.
When is the shortest day of the year? What is the Winter Solstice?
The winter solstice is the phenomenon of the sun’s journey across the tropic of Capricorn. It falls on December 21 or 22. This is closely related to the length of the solar year, as well as to the use of leap years, due to which the winter solstice occasionally falls on December 20 or 23. In 2021, the first day of astronomical winter falls on Tuesday, December 21. However, for the December solstice to occur, the following conditions must be met:
- in the northern hemisphere of our globe, the sun is in the tropic of Capricorn, which is as far south as possible
- the sun is at its zenith
On this day, we can expect sunrise around 7 o’clock and sunset around 3 o’clock. The day lasts then less than 8 hours, and the rest of the day it is night.
Since when is the day? The day will start to get longer soon
The night becomes shorter and the day longer than the winter solstice. In 2021, the arrival of the day will start exactly on December 21. However, it takes quite a long time to lengthen it. Since the beginning of the astronomical winter, hours are beginning to grow in which it is light outside, but the nights are still long. The day grows longer than the night comes spring. Then the so-called spring equinox occurs. In 2022 it falls on March 20.
