At the age of 40, she was the first woman in the world to circumnavigate the world alone on a sailing yacht. Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz has gone down forever in the history of world shipping. In a world full of sea adventures, one of the most inspiring figures is undoubtedly Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz from Warsaw – the first woman in the world who dared to circumnavigate the Earth alone. Beautiful, talented and modest, she has become an icon not only for sailing enthusiasts, but also for all those who dream of overcoming the limits of their own abilities.

In 1976, on board the specially built yacht “Mazurek”, Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz set off on a historic cruise that went down in gold in the annals of sailing history. On March 28 of that year, she started her journey from Las Palmas, and the cruise route included, among others, Atlantic, Panama Canal, Pacific Ocean, Australia and the coast of Africa. After two extremely intense years, on March 20, 1978, she completed the round-the-world cruise around the Cape Verde islands, sailing 28,696 nautical miles.

During one of the conversations on Polish Radio in 1977, Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz emphasized that sailing alone is a lot of work, especially on such long stages. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that her modesty and humility were as impressive as her sailing achievements. Despite the difficulties she experienced, she always maintained composure and did not panic in difficult situations.

She remained devoted to her passion for sailing until the end of her life, actively participating in sailing life. She sat on the jury of the Cruise of the Year and Kolosy awards, and was also a valued member of the Maritime Sailing Committee of the Polish Sailing Association. For her achievements, she received many prestigious awards, including the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Gold Medal for Outstanding Sports Achievements, and the Silver Medal of the Ministry of Sport and Youth of the Republic of France.

In 2008, for all her sailing achievements, especially for the first solo cruise around the world as a woman, Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz was honored with the highest Polish sailing distinction – the Silver Sextant. Her name also appeared in the Guinness Book of Records, and the Super Colossus distinction received in 2008 was a recognition of her extraordinary contribution to the world of sailing.

It is worth mentioning that Chojnowska-Liskiewicz was not only a heroine at sea, but also a member of the elite New York Explorers Club.
