This is the most patriotic name in Poland. It requires courage and strong character. Today we choose them less and less often

It is among the most common Polish names, although each year we call our daughters this less and less often. It’s a pity, because behind it lies not only strength of character and courage, but also true patriotism.

When we think about the most popular female names, Anna, Katarzyna and Aleksandra come to mind. However, although many people have it, we do not mention this name first. And over time it appears less and less often, because for years the most frequently chosen names have included Julie, Zosie and Hanie. However, if we get to know them a little more, we may be more willing to call our daughters that. Really worth!

Saint Barbara – a stranger among her own

Saint Barbara is the patroness of hard work, a good death, and converts. It is associated with many professions, but the most popular is, of course, miners. Why? All because of one of the parables. Saint Barbara came from a pagan family, but she became a Christian. Her father did not like this and decided to imprison her in the tower. As she ran away and her father was chasing her, the rock split open in front of her and the woman squeezed through the gap. Ultimately, however, she was executed by beheading.

What does the name Barbara mean?

Saint Barbara in Latin means a foreigner, a stranger among her own people, which well reflects being a Christian in a pagan family. Throughout her life, she was determined to return to her roots, which is why she is associated with hard work. From the book of names we can also learn that Barbaras are women with strong character and great courage. They are not afraid to fight for themselves and are self-confident and self-assured. They value independence. At the same time, they are emotional people and require warmth and care.

Barbara – sad statistics

Barbara’s name day falls several times a year, but the most popular date is, of course, December 4. On this day, we celebrate St. Barbara’s Day in Poland, i.e. miners’ holiday. Due to this, Barbara became a name associated with Polishness and patriotism. The statistics are even more sad. Although it is the sixth most popular name in Poland (like , 485,438 people have it – as of January 2023), today we call our daughters that less and less often. Last year, they were given to almost 100 girls, and this year – almost half as many. This is a great pity, because although Barbara comes from Latin, it is a truly patriotic name.
