This is how much it costs you to keep the Christmas lights on for 4 hours. We counted every penny

With the holidays fast approaching, many homes have a Christmas tree and decorations. They also include beautiful, sparkling lights. Have you ever wondered how much electricity they can use and what costs it involves?

When decorating the Christmas tree, we use colorful baubles, shiny chains and other decorations. Of course, there are also beautiful lamps that will give the whole thing a unique character. Lights sparkling in glass decorations are one of those magical sights that have always been associated with the holidays. However, looking at it from a practical perspective, do you know how much such pleasure costs you?

Inflation and noticeable electricity increases this year have made many people look for ways to save. No wonder they are also taking a closer look at electric Christmas decorations, which generate additional costs. We are talking primarily about lamps that proudly decorate not only the tree, but sometimes even entire apartments or houses. What costs are involved?

Do Christmas lights consume a lot of electricity? How much current do LED diodes consume?

As we can read on the “” website, we can safely assume that one lamp has a power of approximately 0.5 W. Of course, this is an average value, as it may vary slightly depending on the model of a given item. However, this means that one string of 100 pieces has approximately 50 W of power. Assuming that on average the lights are on for 4 hours a day, they will consume 0.2 kWh during this time. LED lamps are a much more economical option. 100 lights in one string consume approximately 0.014 kWh for 4 hours. So how much will we pay for it to be turned on?

How much do Christmas tree lights cost? The amounts are not large

Considering the fact that electricity prices in 2023 range from PLN 94 to PLN 1.03 per 1 kWh, 50 W lamps are turned on for 4 hours we will pay from 19 to 21 groszy. Assuming that the Christmas tree stands on average for 14 days, after 2 weeks of such lighting it will be from PLN 2.66 to PLN 2.94. In turn, LED lights that stay on for the same period will cost us less than regular LED lights that stay on for 1 day. Of course, these data are averages and may vary slightly depending on the tariff and consumption above or below the established limits. You should also remember that the price is for one chain of 100 lights, and we often hang more of them on the Christmas tree itself. Nevertheless, it is worth taking into account the approximate prices, which fortunately are not outrageous.
