More than a hundred works coming from around thirty museums and collections will review the work and “the creative universe” of Eduardo Chillida in an exhibition that will open in June next the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastianwhich will show works of his and his artistic environment in the first three decades of work.

“Eduardo Chillida and the arts of his time. A conversation (1950-1970)” is the title that the proposal will have, with which the San Sebastian museum will celebrate the centenary of the birth of the sculptor (born in January 1924) and will include sculptures, photographs, paintings, historical documents and even films, scores, choreography or pieces related to fashion design.

It will be the most important temporary exhibition in San Telmo in 2024, according to the progress of the programming which its managers announced this Friday, and will include, in addition to works by Chillida, a selection of works by 23 creators from different disciplines such as Giacometti, Paul Klee, Barbara Hepworth, Picasso, Stanley Kubrick, Dubuffet, Robert Bresson, Nestor Basterretxea, Cristobal Balenciaga and Jean-Luc Godard.

The director of San Telmo, Susana Soto, explained that in the production of this exhibition, curated by María Bolaños, in addition to Chillida Leku, some 30 museums and cultural institutions from different countries collaborate, as well as private collectors, who will lend pieces to exhibit them from June 8 to November 29.

Diverse offer, in formats and arts

The exhibition line for the next year will once again have as its “main characteristic” diversity, both in themes, formats and arts, as indicated by the director of San Telmo.

In 2024, the San Sebastian museum has scheduled “Brains”, an interesting exhibition that will inaugurate this December 16 and can be visited until April 14, which has been organized together with the Center for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona, ​​the Telefónica Foundation and the Wellcome Collection in London.

Through historical, scientific and artistic materialthe proposal will take the public “into the anatomy of the human brain,” as well as animal and artificial brains, as well as, above all, into what “this important organ is capable of producing,” said Soto.

Soto has also announced the passage of a traveling exhibition, between September and early January 2025, “Time of freedom. Life and work of Luis Martin-Santos (1924-1964). The National Library and Acción Cultural Española are the organizers of this exhibition, which will introduce the general public to the San Sebastian writer and psychiatrist, author of “Tiempo de Silencio”, beyond his literary facet.

Regarding the exhibition of its own collections, San Telmo will present from the end of October a selection of Galarza background images which preserves more than 3000 photographs of Gregorio González Galarza and his son Carmelo, which will show the urban development of the capital of Gipuzkoa in the mid-20th century.

Also photographic will be the exhibition that will be dedicated to Isabel Azkarate from January 26 to April 7, made up of three series related to art.

The sculptor Xare Álvarez will be another of the contemporary artists who will have their space next year, from May 25 to August 24, within the annual ‘Artea Abian’ program.

Likewise, in the interventions of the so-called ‘Bikoitza Museum’, you can enjoy the works of Hinrich Sachs (now open, until October 2024) and Maddi Barber (from April 2024 to April 2025).

Remodeling and balance

From “the reflection” on its permanent collection and once the renovation of the space dedicated to historical art has been launched, it has been announced that throughout 2024 a “deeper” renovation will be undertaken, that of the so-called room 100 years of Basque arthe highlighted, in which contemporary Basque creation will be incorporated into the permanent exhibition with works acquired in recent years.

For his part, the Councilor for Culture, Jon Insausti, has taken stock of the activity figures in San Telmo this year, when it has exceeded 160,000 visitors in eleven months, with the Sorolla exhibitions (about 48,000), the of ‘Ideal Climate’ posters (50,000) and that of watercolors by Amable Arias (with about 10,000) as those that have attracted the most audiences.
