Zdrojewski has only been in office for a week, but the changes he announces are very important for the operation of the press, radio and television. The chairman of the committee emphasizes that the National Media Council is an “unconstitutional entity that operates illegally” and there is no doubt that the institution should be gotten rid of.
Bogdan Zdrojewski wants to abolish the National Media Council and the TV license fee
“There are doubts about the mode of ending this entity: whether to do it by dismissing members or liquidate it by way of a law with the threat that the president will veto it. There are several scenarios, but one thing is obvious: the RMN is to be liquidated,” he says with Wirtualne Media Zdrojewski.
In addition, the head of the parliamentary culture committee wants to completely abolish the TV license fee. “It is anachronistic, unfair, ineffective and brings quite questionable income when it comes to television. It must be remembered that all those who have ever registered a radio or television set are punished. Virtually everyone uses television or radio, and only a few pay for it. Maintaining the subscription in its current form is unlikely,” Zdrojewski comments.
Changes in the financing of public media. Zdrojewski announces savings
He also adds that other ways of financing should be found and is also opposed to multi-million compensation for public media from the state budget. As we read on the Wirtualne Media website, in 2023 public media received compensation of PLN 2.7 billion in bonds.
“We are fully convinced that further debt, because these are bonds, should not be continued. We will return to a different way of financing public media, definitely more rational and economical. However, it is too early to talk about it, until we receive a budget to work on, these are These are just speculations,” Zdrojewski notes.
