We decided to take a look at several directors with achievements that are undoubtedly great, but at the expense of the stress of their colleagues. It turns out that on some film sets the actors felt more like they were in the army than in Hollywood. Watch the episode:
Stanley Kubrick was a difficult director, but maybe Fincher is even more difficult?
In addition to the people we talk about in the program, legends about difficult cooperation also circulate, among others: on David Fincher. The director of such films as “Seven”, “Fight Club”, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, “Social Network” and the series “House of Cards” and “Mindhunter”, is accused of, among other things, not agreeing to the slightest improvisation. R. Lee Ermey, an actor and military man who died in 2018 and played the famous screaming and hat scene in “Full Metal Jacket”, said: “He’s afraid to take risks. He’s afraid to let someone change even one word from the script. He wants puppets.” “I don’t want actors to be creative. If you can’t handle acting and you’re not creative, I would recommend acting for David Fincher because he won’t let you act even if you’re a damn good actor.” Remember, this guy worked with Stanley Kubrick!
Fincher is said to have a hard time with Edward Norton, Robert Downey Jr., and Jake Gyllenhaal – I read that the latter actor cried a lot when he found out that the shooting hours had been deleted because Fincher decided so. – I think I’m the perfect person to work with Fincher because I know how the gulags work – said Downey Jr. figuratively, saying that he did not intend to work with this director ever again after “Zodiac”, although at the same time he admitted that he loved watching his films.
One take is four hours
Wes Anderson is also apparently not the easiest person to work with. He is a creator who pays so much attention to details (sic!) that he often irritates, for example, cinematographers by demanding perfect symmetry of frames. Jeffrey Wright said that for one theoretically simple shot in which he touches the holster, opens the lid and grabs the gun, they shot for four hours and did 60 retakes.
Apparently he doesn’t pay very well either, but… he has specific requirements. What? When he was filming Asteroid City, for example, he wanted his cast to eat lunch with him every day. But not like normal, just not breaking out of roles.
