The artist twice received the Tony Award, which is given to theater creators in the United States. She received the first one in the 1970s for her role in the play “The Good Doctor”. The second one was awarded to Sternhagen two decades later, when she was recognized for her role in the play “The Heiress”. Critics also praised her for her stage performance in the Broadway play “On Golden Pond”.
Viewers loved her for her role as Buuna MacDougal in the series “Sex and the City” and Esther Clavin in the comedy “Cheers”. She talked about the roles she played in an interview with the Los Angeles Times: “I must admit that it’s a lot of fun playing these snobbish old ladies… I’ve known women like that, so I know how to play them.”
Frances Sternhagen received nominations for numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the melodrama “Pride and Prejudice”. She also appeared in “A Distant Land”, “Life Recovered” and “Highway”. She was in a relationship with actor Thomas A. Carlin, whom she married in 1956. The couple had six children.
