Many people may wonder when December falls. Some people want to do Christmas shopping then, while others count on some rest. The matter is resolved by the act together with the amendment adopted by the Sejm. So what will the ban on trading on Christmas Eve look like not only this year, but also in future years?
Trading ban on Christmas Eve. What about the current act?
From March 1, 2028, a ban on Sunday trading was gradually introduced. From 2020, we can only shop on the last Sundays of January, April, June and August. It is also possible to use the Sunday before Easter and two Sundays before Christmas. Taking into account the act currently in force, this year’s shopping Sunday would fall on both December 17 and 24, i.e. Christmas Eve.
Today, however, the Sejm adopted a bill with an amendment that prohibits trading on every Sunday on Christmas Eve. That’s why stores will only be open on December 10 and 17 during standard hours. However, there will be 32 points of the trading ban, which are also listed in the current Sunday Trading Ban Act. These include pharmacies, gas stations and postal services. The act is to cover not only this year’s Christmas Eve, but also apply in future years.
Trading ban on Sundays and holidays, and Christmas Eve. The Sejm decided almost unanimously
It is worth noting that the decision taken today by the Sejm was made almost unanimously. As many as 429 out of 441 MPs voted in favor of adopting the bill together with the amendment. 12 people abstained from voting, and no one voted against the introduction of the act. The Sejm has already passed it, and now the bill goes to the Senate. However, it is worth remembering that it still needs to be signed by President Andrzej Duda for it to come into force.
