From 2020, public media receive PLN 2 billion annually from the state budget. The amount was established as compensation for lost subscription revenues. There is no provision in the Act for next year on granting a similar amount again.
TVP needs more subsidy from the state. Two billion is not enough
According to “Fakt”, the government was to submit an amendment to the new budget, which would include PLN 1.95 billion for public media. However, the head of the National Media Council believes that the amount will not be enough this time.
On Monday, November 28, the Council met with the president of TVP, Mateusz Matyszkowicz, to talk about the tasks and funds that Telewizja Polska needs for their implementation. After the debate, Krzysztof Czabański, head of the Interia Council, said he would try to increase funding for public media.
“The amount of compensation must be increased,” determined the National Media Council
The Chairman of the Council intends to submit an application for over PLN 3 billion. “In order to be able to carry out all the tasks resulting from the Charter of Duties for public media, the amount of compensation must be increased. I have been authorized to hold talks on this matter with the new government,” says Czabański.
The amount the Council will seek is reportedly PLN 3.03 billion, but no binding decision has been made regarding its amount. “The Council is a body that makes decisions through resolutions. There was no resolution or authorization regarding specific amounts,” notes Robert Kwiatkowski, a member of the National Media Council.
