A case for a reporter is Elżbieta Jaworowicz’s original intervention program, broadcast for the premiere on TVP1 with breaks from January 29, 1983. Its main goal is to intervene in conflicting social matters and to potentially find solutions to difficult situations. It is often the case that the discussions that break out in the program are very controversial. It also happened after the last episode.
Patron: I cannot look at Eric because he is suffering
Ewelina and Przemysław Kopczewski decided to participate in “A case for a reporter” because they want to get financial help for their son’s treatment in the United States. None of the clinics in Poland wanted to treat the boy. Eryk, 8 years old, was born with an underdevelopment of the left side of his heart. The boy’s parents found out about his illness in the 20th week of pregnancy. However, they did not consider the option of opting for an abortion.
During the presentation of the program’s guests, one of the invited experts spoke – attorney Maria Wentlandt-Walkiewicz. – I cannot look at Eric because he is suffering. And this child must be helped. I have no reservations about this – began Walkiewicz.
In turn, later in her speech, she said something that caused great controversy. In her opinion, it would be better for a boy if his mother decided to have an abortion during pregnancy.
But a mother who loves her child has to wonder what fate is possibly in store for him. And you know what, I’m wondering if, as a mother, I wouldn’t have made a different decision then. Because I love a child, I’m sorry, and I would not like my child to be experimented on.
Eric’s mother responded to the woman’s words. If she terminated her pregnancy, she said, she wouldn’t be able to meet her eyes. – Do you have conscience to look into the eyes of a suffering child? replied the attorney.
Boy’s mother’s panic attack
After this exchange, the studio guests started shouting at each other. Finally Erica’s mother said firmly:
My baby is happy.
The nervous conversation caused Ms Ewelina Kopczewska to experience a panic attack. However, no one in the studio helped the woman. – Why are you screaming? Let you calm down – said Elżbieta Jaworowicz.
