Arkadiusz Gołąsz was born on May 10, 1981 in Przasnysz. He was a lively child and quickly fell in love with volleyball, especially volleyball. He took his first steps on the pitch when he was only 10 years old, and from the very beginning the coaches noticed his potential and unwavering determination.
The coaches said he “jumped like a spider.” Gołąsz was considered one of the best volleyball players in the country
Persistent work began to bring the desired results quite quickly. In 1996, he joined the cadet team of MKS MOS Wola Warszawa, with which he won the title of vice-champion of Poland two years later. After another 2 years of hard training, he finished the same competition on the podium and soon after joined the AZS Częstochowa club. Gośle was 201 cm tall, had an attacking range of 362 cm and a blocking range of 338 cm, which is why he was called “stratospheric range”. Although many considered him one of the best, he was characterized by modesty and self-criticism. – He was intimidated by all the praise. He was always critical of himself and repeated that he still had a lot to learn. Many times after the match I said: “Son, you played nicely”, and he only said: “Come on, mom. It was bad here, I made a mistake there” – his mother in one of the interviews.
2005 was supposed to be a breakthrough year for the young man, not only professionally, but also privately. On July 21, he married the chosen one of his life, Agnieszka, with whom he had been married for over 4 years. Almost at the last minute, the ceremony was postponed by 5 days because the original date collided with the World Championship qualifying tournament, in which Poland ultimately took part. No one expected that the match won against Portugal in Rome on September 8 would be the last one in Gołaś’s career.
A tragic accident ended his career. Gołaś’s wife was charged with unintentional manslaughter
After one season in the Italian club Semper Volley Padwa, Gołości was hired by Lube Banca Macerata as one of the youngest players in the team. On September 16, 2005, he set off with his wife in a new Toyota Avensis, purchased a few days earlier, to sunny Italy for the team’s pre-season presentation. According to the contract, they were to take turns driving the car. At some point, tired of the journey, Gołości woke up his beloved. – Change, I’m tired. If anything happens, wake me up – he said to Agnieszka, taking the passenger seat. Shortly afterwards, on the A2 motorway in Griffen near Klagenfurt, the car unexpectedly veered into the right lane, hitting the concrete base of a sound-absorbing wall. Arkadiusz Gołości died on the spot and his wife was taken to hospital. – This is a great loss for the entire volleyball. I think that within a year or two of playing for such an excellent club, Gołości would become the best center in the world, said Argentine coach Julio Velasco when the news of the volleyball player’s death reached the media.
Agnieszka successfully completed the recovery period, but her mental condition was not good. It took her a long time to realize what had happened. – How much do I remember? Snapshots. One blink of the eyelids: we get into the car, the second blink: hospital. Third: the parents are already here and they are telling us what happened. Apparently I got the hospital back on its feet. I made a fuss that they didn’t want to let me go to Arek – she said in “Gala”. Ultimately, she was sentenced to imprisonment with conditional suspension of the sentence for a period of 3 years for unintentional manslaughter. Additionally, she was banned from driving and fined PLN 1,000.
