In 1963, Joanna Szczerbic graduated from the State Higher School of Film, Television and Theater in Łódź. She started acting at the Powszechny Theater in Łódź and at the Polish Theater in Poznań. In the same year, she made her debut in the film “Mansarda”, and in 1964 she played the main role (Agnieszka Żzaniec) in Sylwester Chęciński’s film “Agnieszka 46”. The role opened the door to her career.
Joanna Szczerbic and Jerzy Skolimowski. He tried to win her favor twice
Joanna could later be seen in productions such as “Hot Line”, “Jutro Mexico”, “Bariera” and “Ręce do up”. Everyone was delighted with her talent and saw her as the new leader of the Polish People’s Republic. While still a student, Szczerbic met Jerzy Skolimowski, who liked her very much. However, she did not reciprocate his feelings. The rejected director started a relationship with Elżbieta Czyżewska, but this relationship did not last. Then fate put Jerzy in Joanna’s path again. This time the young actress decided to give him a chance. In 1965 they got married and in 1969 they left Poland. In 1968, the couple’s first son, Michał, was born. 2 years later they welcomed Józef into the world. Joanna gave up acting in films and took up running the house and taking care of the children.
She sacrificed her career for her family. Was it really her decision?
Skolimowski claimed that it was solely the decision of Szczerbic, who was allegedly fed up with being an actress. – Joanna didn’t want to play anymore for many years. When she married me, she announced with relief that she no longer had to pursue acting, that she wanted to be a wife and mother – quotes Jerzy “”. Jan Włodarczyk, the director’s collaborator, was of a different opinion. – Jerzy was extremely jealous of his productions and his wife. He took her away and hid her from people. Few people realize that it wasn’t her who withdrew. Skolimowski blocked it for some reason, he confessed. Things weren’t going well for them. The director allegedly cheated on Joanna regularly. When their son Józef died in 2012, Szczerbic broke down. She died 2 years later, on March 8, 2014.
