She was supposed to play Hanka in “The Peasants”. She got the role of Jagna because another actress “fell in love and gave up”

The painted animation “Peasants” has been conquering cinemas all over the country for several weeks. In the first film adaptation of W³adys³aw Reymont’s novel, which premiered in 1973, Emilia Krakowska played the role of Jagna. Only now has it come to light that the role was initially given to another actress.

directed by Jan Rybakowski is a film adaptation of one of the most important novels in Polish literature by Władysław Reymont. In the cult film from 1973, one of the main characters was played by Emilia Krakowska, creating an unforgettable portrayal of Jagna on screen. As it turned out years later, the director initially planned a different role for her.

She wasn’t supposed to play Jagna in “Chłopy”. The director entrusted this role to another actress

When Rybakowski started working on , Krakowska already had several famous screen titles under her belt, but the theater was the place where she mainly developed her aspirations. After the auditions, the director suggested that she play Hanka and cast Jagna in the role, but she unexpectedly withdrew from the project. – She was in love and gave up. And of course I was furious with her, because of my greed – Krakowska in the program “Jaruzelska’s Constellation”.

The reason for her dissatisfaction was the fact that, due to Seniuk’s resignation, Rybakowski finally entrusted her with the role of Jagna, which, as it turned out, she had previously played in the theater. – I thought I would have a new challenge and play Hania, whom I had not played in the theater. I even told Fuńka (Stefania Iwińska), who played Hanka in the theater, that I would cheat on her. Because she really was great. And so it happened, said the actress.

Krakowska understood the actress’s motivation. She had a similar situation herself

However, the initial bitterness quickly passed, and the actress fully devoted herself to the production, creating a role that has become a permanent part of the history of Polish cinema. Years later, she admitted that deep down she understood her friend’s motivation, because in the past she had resigned from participating in “The Threepenny Opera” with master Aleksander Bardini precisely because of love. – Anus, I understood because I had fallen in love a little earlier and I also refused to ask Professor Bardini, who was then offended at me because I couldn’t play in “The Threepenny Opera”, because here I fell in love so wonderfully, truly and for the first time in life and it’s such a killer – Krakowska commented with a laugh.
