Bob Dylan y Louise Glück, en euskera

The Elkar publishing house has published and presented this Monday the last two results of the Jokin Zaitegi award: the collection of lyrics by Bob Dylan “100 songs” and Louise Glück’s book of poems “Basairisa”.

Both works can be read from today in Basque thanks to the Jokin Zaitegi awards, organized by the Arrasate AED association and the Elkar publishing house with the collaboration of the Arrasate City Council and Laboral Kutxa. The awards are organized every year to translate the winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature into Basque.

This time, Elkar will publish the 2016 and 2020 Nobel winners: “100 kantu”, a compilation of lyrics by Bob Dylan and “Basairisa”, published by the American poet Louise lucky in 1993.

“100 kantu” has been translated by Xabier Paya, and it is a 100-letter anthology by composer, performer and lyricist Bob Dylan, in which, according to the translator himself, “most of the pieces retain the rhyme and marry the original melody.”

“Basairisa”, meanwhile, is a book published in 1993 by Louise Glück, winner of the Nobel Prize in 2020, and translated into Basque by Garazi Ugalde Pikabea, which I have explained that “I chose from the beginning the simplest vocabulary”. Furthermore, Ugalde affirms that Glück’s poetic voice is “intimate but universal, cultured but convenient, as dark as it is sharp, attentive to details but also leaves room for what is not said”.
