Are the leaves of the Spathiphyllum turning brown? Be careful, you may be making one of these 5 mistakes

Spathiphyllum is a tropical plant that is a popular potted decoration in many homes. Properly cared for, it can please our eyes with its flowers all year round. However, this is not always successful. Especially since a small mistake or slight negligence is enough for the leaves of the Spathiphyllum to turn brown. How to deal with this?

Most often, brown leaves are caused by one or a combination of 5 care mistakes that can happen to anyone. Watering comes first – in the case of this plant, we often hear the opinion that it should be poured abundantly with water. This is strongly discouraged. Indeed, the tropical Spathiphyllum likes frequent watering – but moderately!

However, if we overdo it and our Spathiphyllum “sinks” in the water from the watering can every time, we can quickly contribute to the rotting of the roots. Signs of the plant slowly dying will include: brown leaves.

But it is also important what water we use to water our fanciful flowers. The quickest and easiest way, of course, is to drink water from the tap – this is a big mistake. Running water is usually too hard to serve to a Spathiphyllum. Therefore, it should be replaced with distilled water. If you don’t have one at home, just fill a jug or watering can with tap water and leave it in a dark place for 8 to 12 hours. After this time, we can water our flower with it without any worries. The Spathiphyllum also likes sprinkling the leaves, for which we should also use distilled or settled water.

What else? Winter is not favorable to Spathiphytes for two reasons. First of all – dry air, which our apartments are saturated with during the heating season. If the flower is too dry, the leaves will start to become brown. That’s why it’s worth buying an air humidifier – it can also be a salvation for us. If this is not possible, remember to water the plant regularly.

The Spathiphyllum cannot be too cold either. The preferred temperature for this plant is approximately 18-25 degrees Celsius. Our green addition does not easily get used to sudden changes in temperature or piercing cold. If we have leaky windows, we ventilate the apartment too much, exposing houseplants to the cold – don’t be surprised that over time your plant will grow brown leaves.

Point 5 is fertilization. You can also overdo this, and then the plant will let you know about it with the dried tips of the leaves turning brown. The Spathiphyllum likes nourishment, but not too much. It is best to fertilize it from April to September. However, if we decide to transplant the plant to another pot, it is best to wait several weeks before fertilizing, giving the plant space to “settle” in the new soil.
