Minnie Woolsey was born in 1880. She suffered from Seckel’s syndrome, a rare condition commonly known as avian dwarfism. Due to skeletal defects, she had skull dysmorphia and was also intellectually disabled. People like her were confined to mental hospitals, so she probably spent most of her life in an insane asylum in Georgia.
She became the star of “freaks” events. The circus changed her life
Woolsey is ambiguous. According to some information, she was sold by her parents, while others say that she caught the attention of the organizer of performances with “freaks” in the main role. Regardless of which version is true, the fact is that it eventually made its way to . Her appearance deformed by the disease, including, among others, the lack of hair and teeth, low-set ears and short limbs were emphasized by characterizing her as a bird. She wore a hat with a large feather on her head, a fur coat and shoes made to resemble crow’s feet, and her large eyes were enhanced by thick glasses.
Initially, she didn’t feel comfortable on stage, she was embarrassed by the spotlights and the audience whistling from all sides. Over time, however, Bird Girl, as she was nicknamed, became accustomed to the new reality and loved the attention they wanted to give her. Apparently, over time, she couldn’t imagine not appearing on stage and even just thinking about the performance would shake with joy. However, it often happened that she became the object of ridicule and jokes, because the disease was also associated with intellectual disability.
Bird Girl starred in a cult horror film. Towards the end of her life, she was reluctant to go on stage
Its phenomenon was so widespread that it eventually caught the attention of filmmakers. In 1932, Tod Browning cast her as Koo-Koo the Bird Girl in the cult classic “Freaks”, whose subversive plot was partly intended to normalize disability. Although there were many characters similar to her in the production, she was the one who made the biggest splash. One of the most famous scenes with her participation is the one in which she dances on the table during the wedding feast.
Soon after, Minnie’s health began to decline and she also had less strength due to her age. Eventually she ended up on Coney Island in New York, where she turned into the “Blind Girl from Mars”. She stopped playing the first violin and started avoiding interaction with viewers. The last mention of her comes from 1960, when she was hospitalized with a broken arm. It is not known what her fate was, nor where and when she died, but it is certain that she lived to be at least 80 years old.
