Lech Wałęsa is the co-founder and first chairman of NSZZ “Solidarność” and president of Poland in 1990-1995. He is considered a legend by many. Lech and Danuta Wałęsa had eight children. On November 19, Jarosław and Bogdan appeared in the “” studio. In a conversation with Marcin Prokop and Dorota Wellman, Lech’s sons told what their childhood and relationship with their father were like. They admitted that Wałęsa was rarely at home, so it was difficult for them to form any bond. – The father was actually gone. He was always detained, arrested or on some sort of parade. When he did, he was obviously a demanding, strict follower of his mother’s orders. How he was, because generally he wasn’t there. My mother replaced him as best she could. Recently I asked him a question: “Father, where were you when I needed you?” – said Bogdan Wałęsa in the program.

Jarosław is 6 years younger than Bogdan and he thinks that he felt his father’s absence more. – I envy Bogdan because he is older than me. In 1980 he was already ten years old, so he had a father for ten years. I was already the leader of “Solidarity” when I was four. Only now do I realize how abnormal the situation was. I don’t have any other father figure, it was normal for me, he confessed. When Bogdan heard these words, he shook his head firmly. – I don’t agree, because the father really wasn’t there. He started his business already in 1970, when I was born. He was constantly detained and arrested, he said.
Despite everything, the sons are proud of Lech and grateful that he tried so hard to do something for the country. However, they agree that their family relationships have suffered as a result. – There are eight of us, but each of us is an only child. Only now are we trying to repair it and build it, because we have serious shortcomings. We are siblings, but we are almost strangers, said Bogdan. He added, however, that this was not an unforgivable regret.
