The Singaporean film, directed by Pek Jia Haio and Ang Jia Jun, has been awarded the Zinebi Grand Prize of the international short film competition, worth 7,000 euros.

The jury has valued the “magnificent cinematographic work” of this short film, 15 minutes long and produced in 2023, in which a man witnesses the sudden death of a stranger and is “forced to face his own mortality.”

It is a short film “full of poetry that takes us along the path of grief” and “very delicately allows the viewer to navigate between the physical wanderings and the inner feelings of the protagonist,” the jury highlighted.

The largest prize in the official section of the festival, worth 12,000 euros and awarded to the best debut film in the international ZIFF (Zinebi First Film) competition, went to the feature film In the Rearviewdirected by Maciek Hamela.

It is a documentary of Polish-French-Ukrainian production in which a van, in which the director of the film and people evacuated after the Russian invasion of Ukraine travel, travels the roads of this country.

The jury awarded this film for the “exceptional strength of its minimalist approach” to the Ukrainian conflict, “exploring horror from a humanistic perspective”, to offer a “poetic and moving portrait of war, free of exploitative images.” .

The organizers of Zinebi, a festival promoted by the Bilbao City Council, announced this Friday the winners of the 65th edition of this event, in which 128 films from 43 countries have participated and which closes tonight with the closing gala.

The Basque Cinema Grand Prize has been awarded to the documentary Ximinoadirected by Itziar Leemsans, while the film The Soldierby Alejandro Cabrera, has won the Spanish Cinema Grand Prix.

The short film It turns blueby the Iranian director, actress and writer Shadi Karamroudi, has won three awards at this Zinebi: the Mikeldi award for best short fiction, the EiTB audience award and the Unicef ​​award.

The Mikeldi for best animated short film has gone to the Franco-Colombian co-production The dogby Carla Melo, while the best short documentary has been awarded The Veiled Cityby Natalie Cubides-Brady.
