They were considered “the most beautiful couple of pre-war cinema”. They fought in the uprising and later escaped to the USA

They were considered the most beautiful couple of pre-war cinema. They met during a film school course and immediately fell in love, but they were forced to hide their relationship for many years. Why?

Maria Bogda was born in Lviv in 1909 and is still considered one of the most talented film stars of the interwar period. Adam Brodzisz was born three years earlier, also in Lviv, and was one of the most talented Polish actors. He first appeared on screen in 1928. In the 1960s, both of them moved to Los Angeles and neither of them appeared on screen again.

They called them the “royal couple”. Why did they hide their relationship for many years?

Maria Bogda played, among others, in “Bogurodzica” and “Mr. Twardowski”, but before she started acting on screen, she completed a course at the Wiktor Biegański Film Institute, where she met Adam Brodzisz. In 1929, she won the “Ilustrowany Kuryer Codzienny” competition for the most beautiful Polish woman. They both came from Lviv and quickly found a common language. The “royal couple”, as they were called, starred together in 8 films. They both took an active part in the Warsaw Uprising. She ran a sanitary point in Mokotów, and he became a sapper. They hid their relationship for many years. Adam was considered a Polish lover and did not want to expose his fans. The adoration that women had for him was so great that when he and Maria finally got married, his desperate fans tore up his autographed photos.

After the war, they disappeared from the screens. They left for the USA, where they decided to settle permanently

After the war, they both did not return to film. Although they tried to get involved on film sets, the post-war reality quickly verified their aspirations. They took up acting in a traveling theater, and in 1961 they went to the United States at the invitation of the Polish community, where they were to give theater performances. They did not return to the country. They lived in Los Angeles and started breeding chinchillas. Adam Brodzisz also worked in a computer company. Maria Bogda died in 1981. The husband passed away 6 years later. The bodies of the famous couple were buried at the Rakowicki Cemetery in Kraków.
