The opposition wants TVP without advertising, experts say it is a revolution. They mention the disadvantages of the idea

The opposition has started working on a bill that will limit and, in the future, possibly eliminate advertising content on public television. Experts warn against the consequences of such an idea.

After the elections, the opposition announced major changes in Politicians assured that with the new balance of power in the government, PiS propaganda on Public Television would disappear. However, big changes take time. The future government’s experts’ proposals included limiting the broadcast of advertisements on TVP.

TVP without ads? The new government will want to limit commercial content on public television

“Public television should be based on social service,” said Jan Dworak, a member of the team preparing the new act on the reform of public media with Wirtualna Polska. The project will soon be subject to public consultations, but we do not know the exact date of this event.

The ideas of experts who are preparing the framework of the act include a significant restriction of advertising on Polish Television. According to Jan Dworak, the “fatal diseases of public media” are not only politicization, but also excessive commercialization. The new project is to include a provision to reduce advertising on TVP by 75%. “Naturally, there are places on public television where advertising cannot be avoided, such as large sporting events. However, what we can propose is a radical reduction in advertising,” Dworak emphasizes.

At the same time, the expert emphasizes that he does not know whether the concept will ultimately be included in the draft law. For now, it is definitely too early to debate this.

The lack of advertising on TVP is a revolution on the advertising market

According to “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna”, the ultimate goal of the opposition is to completely eliminate advertising on TVP. “The parties forming the new parliamentary majority are still considering the option of public television without advertisements. The gradual reduction and eventual elimination of them from public media is also envisaged in the reform program prepared by a group of experts,” we read.

The newspaper’s journalists also report that, according to media commercialization experts, such a move means a revolution on the advertising market. Customers’ inability to use TVP’s advertising offer also means an increase in prices for airtime on other stations. The industries that would suffer from such a procedure include the pharmaceutical business, those selling food, household products and cleaning products. It is companies from these categories that are most likely to invest in television advertising.
