Netflix’s crown jewel “” is back for its final season. For now, the first four episodes are available on the platform – we will have to wait another month for the last four. The British media are already enumerating what is untrue and what certain events presented in the series actually looked like.
“The Crown” – fiction or reality?
“The Crown” entered the culminating phase of the last years of Princess Diana’s life. The first four episodes show a turning point for the entire British monarchy – Diana’s accident in Paris and the royal family’s reaction to her death. The basic events and their chronology from the series roughly match reality. And what about the details? Some things are full of scriptwriters’ guesses, others are completely made up.
- 1. Princess Margaret at Camilla’s 50th birthday
According to the series, Princess Margaret – herself a divorcee after many unhappy and turbulent relationships – looked favorably at Charles and Camilla’s relationship. In “The Crown” she was also present at the future queen’s birthday as the highest in the family hierarchy.
In fact, it is not known whether this was the case. There is no evidence of MaĆgorzata’s presence – or absence – at the birthday party. There is also no information about her attitude towards Karol and his beloved. All scenes in which Margaret talks about their relationship were made up for the needs of the series – although considering the past of the princess herself, they are not very unlikely.
- 2. Prince William’s opinion about Dodi Al-Fayed
According to the series, Prince William allegedly told his mother that he thought Dodi was a “freak”. What the reality looked like – of course, it is not 100 percent known. None of Diana’s sons took part in the work on “The Crown” and the only information about the boys’ approach to their mother’s new partner is available only from Prince Harry’s diaries, published earlier this year.
Harry writes in “Spare” that he talked to William when he was young about Dodi. They apparently agreed that as long as Diana was happy with him, they would be happy for her. William’s conversation with Diana was made up to emphasize that the royal family was – to put it mildly – prejudiced against Dodi.

- 3. Princess Diana and Dodi’s engagement (warning, spoilers!)
In the series we will see a scene with the engagement of Dodi Al-Fayed and Princess Diana. In fact, it is also not entirely known what happened at the Ritz hotel, which the couple left in the middle of the night in 1997. Dodi’s father claims that his son proposed to his beloved. At the same time, the duchess’s close friends claimed that after Prince Charles, she never wanted to get married again.
The engagement ring was officially not found on either Diana or Dodi at the site of the accident. The man’s father claimed that Dodi bought a ring for Diana in Monte Carlo – he found it in the hotel room that the couple left before their deaths.

- 4. William tries to cope with his mother’s death alone
Prince William was only 15 when Diana died. In the series, a few days after her death, before the funeral, she suddenly disappears from the Scottish estate. For several hours the family could not find him. Eventually, however, he returns to the castle.
Prince William and Prince Harry have never mentioned this situation. It can be assumed that it is probable, but not necessarily true.
- 5. Dodi’s father hired paparazzi to take photos of the couple
The series portrayed Dodi’s father, Mohamed Al-Fayed, as being involved in hiring paparazzi. He was to offer really big money for photos showing the affection between his son and Princess Diana. In fact, no evidence of this situation has survived. Mario Brenna – the paparazzi who provided photos of Diana and Dodi kissing – claimed that he accepted a round sum of $5 million for the photos. However, he believed that he did not learn about the location of Dodi’s yacht from his father – he “coincidentally” was in the area.
