“Bambik, peel off, or slay?” What will be the youth word of 2023? We met the final twenty

PWN Scientific Publishing House and the University of Warsaw announced nominations for the Youth Word of the Year 2023 competition. The final twenty included, among others: “bambik”, “slay” or “odklejka”, awarded last year. We will know the results at the beginning of December. Let’s fasten our seat belts, because we’re in for a wild ride.

You will find more interesting texts on the home page.

From among the most frequently submitted words in the first stage, the jury, through consultation with the youth advisory team, selected the final twenty. And there was plenty to choose from – there were nearly 18,000 of them. They include both “new” products and those already known.

The exact composition of the jury is as follows: prof. Ph.D. Anna Wileczek (Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce), prof. Ph.D. Marek Łaziński (University of Warsaw), prof. Ph.D. Ewa Kołodziejek (University of Szczecin), Bartek Chaciński (“Polityka”) and representatives of PWN. The mentioned youth advisory body was the UJK Youth Language and Culture Observatory.

Do you have a sticker? Nice cringe

Now let’s get down to specifics. What words will compete for the title of Youth Word of the Year 2023? This includes: distinguished a year earlier “odklejka”, or popularized by one of the politicians in the public space “bambik”. The latter comes from the well-known game Fortnite (it means a player who “does not have V-bucks”, i.e. the currency used in the interactive world by players). There is also “imo” (“in my opinion” – an acronym for “in my opinion” in English), “base” (as something great) and “cringe” (something embarrassing).

The nominations also include “bratku/ bruh; delulu; drillowiec; fr/ FR; git; kys; LOL/ lol; NPC; oporowo, rizz, side-eye; sigma (variant: sigma male); slay; zgerypała”. Do you feel old? We’re a bit like that.

The above-mentioned “slay” also caught our eye (from English: “to destroy”, “to rebuke”). It means making an impression on someone, impressing someone, e.g. with their appearance. The slang “you slay me” was known among younger Internet users a few years ago, and now its shine shines brighter than ever before. We have a feeling that this is one of the favorites of the competition.

Youth has a voice. An expert explains trends

What are the trends among words used by teenagers on the border between the real world and the Internet? In an interview with PAP, explains prof. Anna Wileczek from the J. Kochanowski University in Kielce and the Youth Language and Culture Observatory of the UJK, chairwoman of the jury of the Youth Word of the Year plebiscite:

Words and expressions that confirm the truth, compliance with reality, obviousness and approval by the interlocutor are popular.

How to vote and when? “Knowledge is power”

Internet users have only until November 30 to decide which of the twenty final words will be named Youth Word of the Year 2023. In addition to the winner, the competition organizers also announced a distinction for the most interesting submitted word along with its definition – it will receive the Jury Prize. The winners will be announced at the beginning of December this year. More words and their meanings can be found on the website of the UJK Youth Language and Culture Observatory. [[]]. This is the 8th edition of the fun. There was even a politician’s name

Youth Word of the Year is a plebiscite organized by Wydawnictwo Naukowe PWN in cooperation with the University of Warsaw. Its aim is to identify the most popular words, terms or expressions among young people. As history shows, a winner does not have to be new or the most used in a particular year. Last year’s winner, “essa”, simply gained a “new life” (shouted as a sign of joy, triumph or generally positive emotions). In previous years, the words “alternatywka” or “śpiulkolot” also won. In 2020, the competition jury announced that for the first time it would not announce the winner – the winner was one of the politicians whose surname begins with the letter “S”. They found it too politicized. The organizers received millions of votes and faced no consequences.
