The words of PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński – who blamed women for the low fertility rate in the country – shocked the whole of Poland in November 2022. Let us recall this scandalous statement, to which not only journalists and politicians, but also a significant part of citizens, reacted with indignation. It was said during Jarosław Kaczyński’s visit to Ełk, which took place as part of the election campaign. – If the situation continues, that by the age of 25 girls drink as much as their peers, there will be no children – said Kaczyński.
I’m not a supporter of very early motherhood, because a woman also has to mature to be a good mother, but if she hits the neck by the age of 25 – I’m just kidding – but it’s not a good prognosis in these matters
– he announced. During his speech, there were also many very erroneous and mythical beliefs regarding alcoholism.
It is worth noting that when selecting the “culprits” for the fertility failure, the PiS president did not indicate pillars such as: the lack of an elementary pro-family policy regarding, among others, professional activation of women after the birth of a child, a limited number of places in state nurseries, the situation in the protection system health, the state of perinatal care in National Health Fund facilities, limited access to prenatal tests, and also – the lack of fundamental reproductive rights of Polish women after the judgment of the Constitutional Tribunal by Julia Przyłębska in 2020, which outlawed abortion due to severe, irreversible damage to the fetus.
“Pregnancy in Poland is simply dangerous”
This is how Polish women who we asked for a comment a year ago responded to the PiS president. – Kaczyński, as usual, treats Polish women patronizingly and assumes that they cannot consciously decide about their lives. But it’s not alcohol that makes me not want to have children, it’s the fact that pregnancy in Poland is simply dangerous – one of the interlocutors told us then. You can read the entire conversation here:
A few days ago, TVN24 social journalist Justyna Suchecka – author of the books “Young Power!”, “I won’t tell you that everything will be fine” and “Generation of Change” returned to the topic. The reporter shared a very personal and traumatic experience from the hospital where she spent 27 days. For 21 of them she was in the pregnancy pathology department. She spent 95 percent of that time lying down. The journalist gave birth to a healthy daughter. However, before delivery occurred, complications arose.
One of the things that put me in the hospital was high blood pressure. And they have most likely been bred for years – under stress and a moderately healthy lifestyle. I wouldn’t have been diagnosed with hypertension if it weren’t for the fact that it needs to be monitored regularly during pregnancy. Because I myself associated them with grandma’s illnesses and drinking coffee. Meanwhile, it is a condition that affects many people, including young people, and can have very unpleasant long-term consequences
– wrote Justyna Suchecka. Here, the reporter encouraged women to undergo regular examinations and take care of their health.
She then wrote moving words about other women she met on the ward. “Wonderful, patient, often experienced by fate with great injustices,” she emphasized. Among them were people who lost children before or during birth, whose pregnancy threatened their health and life. “And these girls lie there, caring and waiting, because they really want their children to be healthy (…). There is distance, a lot of loneliness, waiting,” the TVN24 reporter pointed out.
The journalist stands firm on Kaczyński’s words. “I hope I never hear anything like that again.”
Then she referred to the harmful words of Jarosław Kaczyński, which – when compared to her own observations and experiences – sound even more absurd and shocking.
Seeing these stories up close made me realize how difficult the words ‘hitting in the neck’ were for many people. I hope I will never hear anything like this in public debate again. And a state that promotes fertility should take care of such departments. This is pro-family policy. Making sure that women feel safer, e.g. their families are supported and midwives earn decent wages
– concluded the journalist.
